Though they started off as an alternative group in '80s but they rounded off the century as one of the most widely followed rock bands on earth. They are hailed from Dublin, Ireland and when they stepped into music, no one ever had imagined of the heights of success the band has now reached. U2 has been the biggest rock music act on planet since 1980's. They have won the hearts of millions of music lovers around the world not only by their music but also by their incredible stands on human rights issues.
The current lineup of the U2 includes vocalist and guitarist Bono; guitarist, keyboard player and vocalist The Edge; bassist Adam Clayton and drummer and percussionist Larry Mullen, Jr. The Irish rockers admired primarily punk's raw energy, but they soon distinguished themselves from their post-punk bands/artists with their unique, huge, and soaring sound. Their music was centered on Bono's sensuous vocals and The Edge's reverb-laden guitars and it shunned the sort of ironic expression which was considered hip at that time. U2's songs were also noted for carrying forward the band's stance and reservations on various social issues.
Let's take a brief peek into U2's journey of success. In 1976, drummer Larry Mullen posted an add to form a band. He was joined by four friends: Bono, The Edge, Adam clayton and Dik Evans (he soon left the band and joined the Virgin Prunes). All four members settled on the name U2 and they achieved their first success in 1978, beating off many technically better bands in a talent competition on Saint Patrick's Day. They won 500 while one of the judges of the contest, Jackie Heyden of CBS Records, arranged the band's first demo session. The demo session didn't turn out well because of the band's inexperience.
U2 members then began working on their debut album and put their hearts and souls to make it successful. The album titled 'Boy' was released in October, 1980 to positive reviews. 'Boy' spawned a single I Will Follow that became a huge hit in the United Kingdom. After releasing their debut album, U2 members set out on their first tour across Europe and in the USA. Both audiences and critics noted that Bono had charismatic voice that made him a passionate showman. These live performances across Europe and in America demonstrated the creative potential of U2. Having toured to big venues, the band returned to the studio to record their second album.
In 1981, U2 shook the entire music industry by their second album, October. The album radiated a strong wave of energy through overtly spiritual themes that increased the band's critical acclaim. October propelled U2 to mainstream. The band has released War, The Unforgettable Fire, Wide Awake in America, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, Best of 1980-1990, All That You Can't Leave Behind, Best of 1990-2000, and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb to date. The 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' spawn a single 'Beautiful Day' that became a worldwide hit and garnered U2 three Grammy Awards.
In 1985, U2 performed in the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium and contributed substantially for the Ethiopian famine relief. The performance turned out to be a turning point in the group's career. The boys' reputation for intense and electrifying live shows earned and expanded U2 fans-base. In the 1990s, U2 stunned music critics by their music and concerts which mocked the excesses of commercialism. The band, embracing the dance and alternative rock revolutions, came up with Achtung Baby. The album received huge acclaim from both critics and audiences for containing the band's own sense of musical stagnation.
In 1992 - 1993, U2 set out on The Zoo TV Tour which became a history in itself. The event turned out to be a HUGE success that placed the band on the top of favorite bands' lists. U2's success as a live act increased incredibly while the band heroes became superstars. The band returned to the studios and pursued a more conventional rock sound. They released All That You Can't Leave Behind to positive reviews. The album featured conventional rock music while retaining the influence of the band's early musical experimentations.
To-date, U2 have won 22 Grammy Awards, sold over 145 million albums worldwide and occupied a position of 22 on the Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists/bands. U2 marked its way to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2005. At present, they are performing in closed arenas to be more close to their fans.
