About the Artist
Tyrone William Griffin Jr. or Ty Dolla Sign, as he is professionally known, was born to a musician father. His father was a member of the South Los Angeles band, Lakeside, and so Ty met with legends such as Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire very early on in life. However, Ty initially started off as a gang member in the South Los Angeles group the Bloods. He was lucky enough to break free from it early on in life and used this humbling experience to write his songs. His music was socially charged from the beginning, and Ty was adamant to represent his community.
He ventured into music by picking up the bass guitar and later having a go at the drums, guitars and keyboards. He and his partner Kory were quickly able to sign a record deal with Venus Bowl and then Buddah Brown Entertainment and released the mixtape Raw & Bangin. The duo also collaborated with other artists on their studio albums, featuring on tracks such as “U” with rappers Black Milk and Sa-Ra.
Ty Dolla Sign next began working with YG on the established rapper’s projects and got his big break after appearing on the single “Toot it and Boot it”. He wrote and sang on this track and later became a part of YG’s group Pu$haz Ink.
In 2011, Ty began creating a solo career for himself. He released his first solo single, “All Star” which featured Joe Moses and was produced by Fuego. His next release was “My Cabana” featuring Young Jeezy. Ty cofounded the production team D.R.U.G.S and began recording his own music through them.
Between 2012 and 2014, Ty Dolla Sign took out a series of electric plays under the “Beach House Mixtapes” project. Beach House and Beach House 2 featured guest appearances by many reputable artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Too $hort and Kirko Bangz. Ty also signed a deal with Khalifa’s label Taylor Gang Records. In 2013, he toured with Khalifa and A$AP Rocky on the “Under the Influence of Music 2” tour.
In 2015, he shuffled working with Rihanna, Chris Brown and Tyga, as well as producing his debut album Free TC which was released via Atlantic Records and Taylor Gang Records. It debuted on Number 14 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 22000 copies in its first week. His second album, Beach House 3 was released in 2017. It had a lead single with Lil Wayne and The-Dream titled “Love U Better”. The second single, released on September 1st 2017, was titled “So Am I”. The complete album was launched on October 27th 2017.
