A music genre whose roots are entrenched in rock and roll, rock music has the desired vitality to keep a music lover captivated. Founded in 1994, Train is an American rock band from San Francisco, California which is supported by members Patrick Monahan (lead vocalist), Jimmy Stafford (lead guitar) and Scott Underwood (drummer). The band gathered instant success with the launch of their debut album "Train" in 1998. This was followed by "Drops of Jupiter" their second album whose lead single "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" was a hit worldwide besides winning two Grammy Awards in 2002. The album received double platinum certification in Canada and USA, and is on record as the group's most commercially successful album to date.
"My Private Nation" was their third studio album that accessed the music market in 2003. The album further established Train as a successful band and achieved platinum status in the U.S. Their fourth album "For Me, It's You" released in 2006 failed commercially, though it earned some general positive response from the critics. With renewed zeal, Train launched their latest album "Save Me, San Francisco" in 2009. "Hey, Soul Sister" was the first single from the album that is ranked to date as their most successful hit number. It charted the top three on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten in several other countries.
The story of Train starts with singer Pat Monahan who left his native town Erie, PA, at the end of 1993 after his Led Zeppelin cover band dissolved. He moved to California and met Rob Hotchkiss who was giving performances at various local clubs and coffee houses. The two formed a deal, and started performing together. Monahan acted as the lead vocalist while Hotchkiss served as the supporting vocalist and guitarist. They decided further to form a full-fledged band and hired guitarist Jimmy Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin and lastly drummer Scott Underwood, giving their band the name Train in 1994. They started touring locally acting as opening concerts for bands like Hootie & the Blowfish, Cracker and Counting Crows.
Train released their self-titled debut album in February 1998 whose single "Meet Virginia" got in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 earning the place #15. The band started being recognized on the national scene after the release of this album which secured platinum status by the RIAA. Producer Brendan O' Brien helped launched their second album "Drops of Jupiter" who had a prior experience of working with Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam. The single "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" was released before the album itself. The single was a sensational hit entering the Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for more than a year. The single seized two Grammy Awards, one for Best Rock Song and the other for Best Arrangement.
"Drops of Jupiter" became the first multi-platinum album of Train and it peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. It was also a top 10 hit in UK where it secured the slot #8. "She's on Fire" was the second single from the album which achieved reasonable success. The 2001 comedy "The Animal" featured the single and the album finally secured double platinum certification in USA and Canada while being accredited gold status in Australia.
"My Private Nation" was the third album released by Train in June 2003. "Calling All Angels" was the lead single of the album becoming a smash hit on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Another single "When I Look to the Sky" fared quite well on the Hot 100. The band also released a non-album song "Ordinary" which was used in the movie "Spider-Man 2" apart from being featured in the NBC series "Heroes" in 2007. After that, Train has released "For Me, It's You", their fourth album and "Save Me San Francisco", their fifth studio album.
