Tool started out in 1990, but took a hiatus in 2008. It is currently on tour with a date in Calgary, AB.
All four members of the band moved to Los Angeles for different reasons. Jones was interested in joining the film industry, while Keenan, having studied visual arts, remodeled pet stores part time. Carey on the other hand along with Keenan was already in a band, Green Jelly. After meeting through a mutual friend in 1989, Keenan impressed Jones with his vocals. This resulted in Jones asking Keenan to start a band, which ultimately became Tool in 1990. After finding their drummer and bassist, Tool for the next two years performed locally in Los Angeles. In 1992 they were approached by Zoo Entertainment that released the band’s first EP Opiate. The band described the six songs on the album as the hardest sound they had ever produced. The hard work paid off and the band’s first EP was a critical success.
Next stop for the band was a studio album. Tool released their first studio album Undertow in 1993 with Zoo Entertainment to both critical and commercial success. Undertow was certified Platinum by the RIAA and MC and Gold by the RIANZ. Their second album Ænima was released in 1996 again to rave reviews and impressive worldwide sales. The album did well at the charts as well and was certified Platinum by Recording Associations in the US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Since 1996, Tool has released another two albums Lateralus in 2001 and 10,000 Days in 2006.
