Who is Too Short?

Too Short’s real name is Todd Anthony Shaw. He is an accomplished rapper, actor and record producer. He was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Shaw was into music from the beginning and played the drums in his high school band. In the mid-1980s, Shaw was creating music for his friends in High School.

Early Years

Too Short’s debut EP Don’t Stop Rappin’ was released in 1985. He released a couple more albums after this and all of them featured simple and raw drum beats from a LinnDrum. In 1985, Too Short along with Freddie B. founded their record label, Dangerous Music. The record label was later named Short Records and then Up All Nite Records. In the same year, Too Short and Freddie B. also formed their own rap group called The Dangerous Crew.

1989 - A Big Year for Too Short

In 1989, Too Short released Life Is… Too Short. It was his fifth studio album, which also remains his most successful to date. With record sales in excess of 2 million, Life Is… Too Short was certified double Platinum by the RIAA. The album also peaked at number nine on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It spawned some of Too Short’s biggest hit singles such as Pimp the Ho, City of Dope, and Oakland.

Music after Life Is… Too Short

Too Short has released 14 albums after Life Is… Too Short with his 15th album soon to be released. Out of these, You Nasty, Can’t Stay Away, Gettin’ It (Album Number Ten), Cocktails, Get in Where You Fit In, Shorty the Pimp and Short Dog’s in the House have enjoyed immense commercial success. Of these, all but two albums were certified Platinum in the US, while the remaining two were certified Gold. Can’t Stay Away deserves a special mention since it featured Jay-Z, Lil Jon, Sean Combs and others.

Collaborations

As mentioned earlier, Too Short is famous for collaborating with none other than 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. However, not many know that when Too Short collaborated with these two, they were at the top and were also involved in a feud. In addition to these two mega artists, Two Short has also worked with Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Pimp C and Scarface.

The highlight of his collaboration with The Notorious B.I.G. was The World Is Filled…, a single from The Notorious B.I.G. album Life After Death. Such collaborations won him many fans all over the world and made his own albums even more popular.
