History and Formation of Tommy James and the Shondells
The band initially formed under the name Echoes, and then as Tom and the Tornadoes, headed by a 12-year old Tommy James. The first single was released in 1962 and was called “Long Pony Tail”. Two years later, James renamed the band the Shondells because he thought it “sounded good”. In February of 1964, the band recorded their hit single “Hanky Panky” which was released under Snap Records, a local label. The band started to tour the eastern Midwest to promote its work, but did not gain much success initially. Eventually the band parted ways in 1965, following the graduation of its members from high school.
After considering doing something other than music, James reformed the band with some additional members. At the same time in Pittsburgh, a dance promoter Bob Mack began playing the song “Hanky Panky” at various dance parties, helping generate a noted interest in the single. Soon James was contacted to come and perform the song live. After not being able to get a hold of the other members of the Shondells, James went by himself to make some promotional appearances at the Pittsburgh Radio Station. He put together a quick group and began touring to promote his single. With such exposure, the single soon became a No. 1 hit in July 1966.
Experimentation and Development
Soon after finding success, the band started to experiment with other genres such as pop rock, psychedelic rock and bubblegum music. In 1967, they recorded “I Think We’re Alone Now”, a No.4 hit, followed by the No.10 hit “Mirage”. More success followed as the band continued to develop its style. In 1968, James had a No.3 hit with “Mony Mony” which was co-written by James, Bo Gentry, Cordell and Bobby Bloom.
With the release of these songs, James got the label of a bubblegum pop artist – a label that he hated. Following this development, he started to move towards psychedelic rock and released the single “Crimson and Clover”. Further hits included “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” “Ball of Fire” and “Sweet Cherry Wine” in 1969.
Disbandment and Regrouping
Following a drug-related incident that actually pronounced James as dead, the band was disbanded. James recovered, and moved to the country to take some time out. In 1970, as a side project, he wrote and produced two hit singles. This was followed by a solo career that had two major hits, “Draggin’ the Line” in 1971 and “Three Times in Love” in 1980.
During the mid-1980s, James started touring again with various groups, often going by the name of Tommy James & the Shondells.
It was finally in 2009, when Tommy James and other surviving members of the Shondells, Gray, Rosman and Vale, reunited to record music. The group has gotten together on various occasions after that to perform for their fans and are now all set to do that again this year. The series of performances are going to be everything you have hoped for. So grab your Tommy James and the Shondells tickets at the earliest!
