Stand-up comedy is where Papa started off and it remains his fort. He began hosting and standup routines at NYC’s open microphones and NY comedy club in 1993. He was scouted by Jerry Seinfeld at the Comedy Cellar where he convinced him to join him on his tour. This was the big break and the start of a decade long deal between Seinfeld and Papa, where he performed as the opening act for the star comedian. Fans and critics tagged him as a mix of Seinfeld and legendary Bill Cosby. Every time on stage, Papa proved that he is a great comedian and needs to show more of what he’s got for his fans.
As a standup comedian Papa presents the art of observational comedy that he has mastered over the years very skillfully. He has a unique quality of combining comic incidents or influenced from his family/personal life with observational humor. Tom Papa recorded his first show in 2001 which was a Comedy Central stand-up special. He recorded the second one in 2007. In between these two recordings he released his debut stand-up album in 2005 titled Calm, Cool & Collected. In 2008, Papa reached new heights of success with Only Human, a show he opened as part of the Just for Laughs comedy festival.
Papa’s stand-up comedy show Freaked Out was aired as his first comedy special in the summer of 2013 on Netflix and Epic. This two hour-long special was directed by Rob Zombie. It is one of the most sought after shows by Papa; it is loaded with irreverent appearances where he ridicules churches, mid-life crisis, make-up, empowerment of women, magic and Chinese people and their way of life.
