Having a great band from the past like Toad the Wet Sprocket coming again with a new zeal fills all the music lovers with excitement. With an all new spirit, the band promises an unparalleled excitement for their fans!
Santa Barbara, California based American alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket was founded in 1986. Among the members are included Glen Phillips, the lead guitarist and singer, along with Todd Nichols on guitars, Dean Dinning on bass and Randy Guss on drums. The members were together at San Marcos High School, Santa Barbara from where they decided to work together. At an open-mic public contest near their home town, they performed publicly for the first time. They could not win the competition, but the performance set ground for their career together ahead.
The interesting name Toad the Wet Sprocket was selected by the band because according to them, it was as absurd and meaningless, that they actually liked it. The term was originally used by Eric Idle in a comedy sketch named Rock Notes by Monty Python. According to Idle, he believed the term was so senseless that it could never be used by any rock musicians. He was astonished when while driving he heard over the radio that some band named Toad the Wet Sprocket has come to the scene.
Toad the Wet Sprocket released their debut album in 1989 that was titled as Bread & Circus. It was released through their own record label, Abe Records. The album received mixed reviews by the critics, and could not provide the band a huge commercial success. Nevertheless, there were singles in the album that did good business, including “One Little Girl” and “Way Away”. These songs were also featured on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks Charts.
Their second album titled Pale was released in 1990, and like its predecessor, did not have a great reception. Toad the Wet Sprocket made a record label deal with Columbia Records soon, and its singles were aired regularly over the radio stations, but the band could not establish a repute required by them to have a take off in music industry by that time. It was not before the release of their third album titled Fear that Toad the Wet Sprocket had its name among the popular rock bands of the world. Fear was released in 1991, and singles like “Walk on the Ocean” and “All I Want” made its popularity go sky high very soon. The two songs also reached among the top 20 positions on Billboard’s Hot 100 songs. The band also earned great commercial benefit with the album that was certified Platinum for its sales by the Recording Industry Association of America. Many of the songs from the album were also featured in popular television series and movies like “So I Married an Axe Murderer” by Mike Myers and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Their next album titled Dulcinea was released in 1994, and for the first time a single by Toad the Wet Sprocket reached number one position on US Modern Rock Charts. The single was titled “Fall Down”, and it was also featured at number five on Mainstream Rock Charts. The album was a commercial success, getting Platinum rating by RIAA for its sales. It was followed by In Light Syrup in 1995 and Coil in 1997, the albums that were released before a long pause in the band’s public releases. The band had a break up in 1998 officially, and different members embarked on their solo careers afterwards. There was a temporary reunion in 2002 and 2006, but the band could not manage staying together for long. It was not before 2010 that the members came together as a band again.
Currently Toad the Wet Sprocket is working on their new album after a long time of inactivity. Fans all over the world await the new release by the band that is expected to set new records in terms of sales and popularity.
