Rags to Riches
Tiffany Haddish is the ultimate American story because her life has taken a 180 degree turn in the past decade. Haddish grew up in foster care, as her mother was schizophrenic. She discovered her love for comedy after watching The Dana Carvey Show and Saturday Night Live on television in various foster homes.
During her teenage years, her grandmother became her legal guardian. These were difficult times for Haddish, who grew very agitated at the slightest things. To combat this, she was enrolled by a social worker in the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp, a comedy program for young adults. There, the comedienne discovered her funny bone and soon became passionate about it. After performing standup for many years, she became friends with seasoned comedians such as Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.
Even during her more stable years she became homeless again. At first, she did not let any of her famous friends know about this situation, pretending to live at a friend’s place in Beverly Hills. Her friend and famed comedian Kevin Hart, however, found out about her situation and helped her get good work. Slowly and gradually, Haddish’s life became more stable.
Even though Haddish became well known on the comedy circuit, she did not become a household name until 2017. Before this, she received some recognition for appearing on The Carmichael Show (2015) and in the feature film Keanu (2016).
However, the summer of 2017 brought Haddish to a much larger audience. She appeared in the feature film “Girl’s Trip” along with stars such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah. Despite playing a supporting role, Haddish’s performance is receiving the most attention from critics. She has been dubbed the ‘breakout star’ of 2017 for her standout delivery in the film.
Since then, Haddish’s career has been on a steep incline. Showtime offered her a comedy special, and she delivered a hilarious one titled “She Ready: From the Hood to Hollywood”. The show revolves around her journey and the highly entertaining she has been able to make of Hollywood from a distance. She states during this monologue, “The state of California paid so much money to make sure I don’t die ‘cause they knew I was gonna be special. They knew it. They was like, ‘This one right here, she gonna be a unicorn.’ And they was right. I’m the last black unicorn.” – Tiffany Haddish, She Ready!
Along with this, Haddish also became the first woman of color to host the NBC show Saturday Night Live in November, 2017. The episode showcased the comic’s mimicry skills as well as command over sketch comedy. It also helped in viewers getting familiar with her personality.
Haddish also shined in her appearance on The Late Show. Stephen Colbert could not help but express his admiration for her infectious and bubbly presence, even though this episode was the first time he met her. It is very clear that Tiffany Haddish has made her mark on the entertainment world and is a force to be reckoned with.
