Tiesto, a Dutchman, was born in 1969 and was interested in music from his early age. DJing came to him naturally. From DJing in schools to later all over the Netherlands, he had done it all before becoming professionally known. At that early stage however, he didn’t play the kind of music he plays now. His early influences were acid house and new beat. The beginning of this new century came as a breadth of fresh air both for Tiesto and his music. In 2000, he remixed Delerium’s “Silence” featuring Sarah McLachlan, which won him even more fans all over. However, it was his first solo album In My Memory, which was released in 2001, which made him a household name.

In My Memory had ten singles out of which five became major hits. The album had hit singles like “Lethal Industry”, “Flight 643”, “Obsession”, “Dallas 4PM”, “Suburban Train”, “Urban Train and “In My Memory”. The success of this album skyrocketed Tiesto’s career and he released his second in 2004.  Just Be was Tiesto’s second album which contained singles like “Traffic” which became such a hit that it reached number one spot in the Dutch national charts for 23 years. It was also the first non-vocal track to have received such an honor. Another instant hit was “Sweet Misery”, and “Love Comes Again” which used Latin percussion sounds.

Tiesto has also had the honor of being the only DJ to perform live at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. In 2004, he performed live in Athens Greece, for 2004 Summer Olympic Games. Tracks that he played at the Olympics were later mixed and released in the form of Parade of the Athletes.
Tiesto’s third album was Elements of Life, released in 2007. The album is a mixture of trance, rock and experimental music. Out of twelve singles, the album had hits like “Sweet Things”, “Break My Fall”, “In the Dark”, and “Dance4life”. This album was nominated in 2008 for the prestigious Grammy Award’s, in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album.      

The master DJ’s latest album was released in 2009 under the name Kaleidoscope. Nelly Furtado, amongst others, featured in it. While Tiesto’s previous albums were mostly all about trance music, Kaleidoscope was different. This album is considered to be his most experimental, featuring other electronic genres. It was also an instant success. The album, in its very first week, reached the Top 10 chart on iTunes.

Tiesto’s exceptional musical skills have won him both fame and fortune. He has been the first DJ to hold DJ Magazine’s “No. 1 DJ in the World” title for the three consecutive years. He has been a recipient of the Order of Orange-Nassau, a military and civil order of the Netherlands given to those “who have earned special merits for society”. Tiesto, no matter how famous he becomes, has never taken success for granted and has always been on the go both for the promotion of his albums and his music.

In 2009, he started Kaleidoscope World Tour to promote his album Kaleidoscope. The tour included 150 dates, spanning over five continents. Previously, in collaboration with brand name Armani Exchange, Tiesto undertook In Search of Sunrise: Summer Tour 2008. The tour was conducted specifically for Tiesto’s American fans. But perhaps Elements of Life World Tour was one of his most interesting, since the four elements of life, earth, water, air and fire were the themes of visual concept of the tour.

While Tiesto has both fame and fortune, he has, however, never forgotten the ‘have-nots’ of our society. In 2005, he performed in a fundraiser along with other Dutch artists for the affectees of the Asian Tsunami. In 2006, he became the worldwide ambassador for the Dance4Life foundation, raising awareness of HIV/AIDS.
