This band’s name, Three Dog Night, is inspired by an indigenous Australian tradition and was suggested by the lead vocalist’s girlfriend. The band first started out with three vocalists and then hired new members to form a band that was initially made up of the three vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron, the guitarist Michael Allsup, the drummer Floyd Sneed, the bassist Joe Schermie and the keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon. Three Dog Night was an instant hit and soon become one of greatest band in the US in the sixties and on into the golden seventies. This incredibly successful band was behind many albums, many hit singles and many fabulous live shows.

During their peak, Three Dog Night released many albums out of which thirteen albums were certified gold or above, having sold millions of records. Over twenty of their songs charted high on the Billboard Top 40 and the band was best known for the songs Mama Told Me Not to Come, Black and White and Joy to the World. The band sold around forty million records in the sixties and the seventies only with millions more after that. This hit rock band was also famous for its many covers; the artists whose songs Three Dog Night covered usually became more popular and rose to fame. By the mid seventies, Three Dog Night had grown into an eight member band and was riding the waves of fame.

By the end of the seventies, Three Dog Night went on hiatus with the members pursuing their solo careers. However, in the eighties, Three Dog Night had a spectacular reunion and even went on to release an EP. This reunion had all of the original singers and musicians from the band performing together. The band even went on a fabulous tour that spanned most of the US. After their popular reunion, the band was back with more spectacular music and started playing live music as well as releasing various albums. One of the band’s popular songs, In My Heart, was part of the 1986 hit movie, Robotech: The Movie’s soundtrack with the band also performed in the TV show, Spotlight on Country that appeared on The Family Channel.

Some of the recent work of this amazing band include having their song, Joy To The World, appear on the Sky TV commercial. In terms of albums, Three Dog Night released a collaboration record titled as Three Dog Night With The London Symphony Orchestra in 2002 followed by the album The 35th Anniversary Hits Collection Featuring The London Symphony Orchestra in 2004. Both these albums feature collaborations with the London Symphony Orchestra, one of the greatest orchestras in the world. These albums also have versions of many of the band’s original hit singles. The band’s latest album was released in 2008 and was titled as Three Dog Night Greatest Hits Live.

Today, Three Dog Night is as alive as it was many years ago.
