Thievery Corporation was established at the Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington DC in the year 1995. The duo, Eric Hilton and Rob Garza had a love for music from a very long time, and decided to form a band together. They began their own recording label called the Eighteenth Street Lounge Music, with which they recorded their music. The band rose to fame with the release of their debut LP called Sounds from the Thievery Hi- fI, which was released in the year 1997. Following this, they released their first two twelve inch offerings. The first one was called Shaolin Satellite, and the following one was titled 2001: A Spliff Odyssey. In the year 2000, the group set to work on their full length album, The Mirror Conspiracy, which was released the same year and went on to become a considerable success.
Following that, Thievery Corporation issued another album in the year 2002 with their ESP recording company. The album was called The Richest Man in Babylon, and it features fifteen tracks, most of which were similar in timbre and sound to their earlier album, The Mirron Conspiracy. The album also contained some performances by artists such as Loulou, Pam Bricker, and Emiliana Torrini. In the year 2005, the duo releases a more psychedelic and darker album than any of their previous works. The record was titled The Cosmic Game and went on to become a major hit. It also features some of the most famous celebrities of the industry as guest stars, such as Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, David Byrne and Perry Ferrell. The following year, Thievery Corporation released a selection of songs sung by the band along with other musicians. The record was named Versions and contained several remixes.
Shortly afterward, the group went on an extensive tour of the United States, performing at various places including the Lollapalooza. The photography of the tour was done by their own guitar and sitar player, Rob Myers. The same year, Thievery Corporation recorded Sol Tapado, which was included in their AIDS awareness album called Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin. The fifth studio album of the group was released on the 23rd of September, 2008 under the title of Radio Retaliation, and went on to gain a Grammy Award nomination for the best recording package. Following this, the band went on a tour, which included five sold out concerts in a row at the 9.30 Club in Washington DC. The band has recorded songs in numerous languages such as Hindi, Romanian, Portuguese, Persian, French, Spanish, and English. This reflects the influence of international music on the band.
The latest album by the duo was released in the June of 2011 under the title of Culture of Fear. Some of their most popular singles and EPs over the years include hits such as A Spliff Odyssey, The Foundation, Lebanese Blonde, DC 3000, It Takes a Thief, Focus on Sight, The Lagos Communique, Shadows of Ourselves, Bossa Per Due, Sol Tapado, Revolution Solution, Warning Shots, The Heart's a Lonely Hunter and numerous more as well.
