The XX band was founded in 2005 by a group of school friends who were studying at the Elliot School in London, England. This school is famous for producing other popular bands such as Four Tet and Hot Chip. The initial lineup included singer and guitarist Romy Madley Croft, bassist Oliver Smith and recording artist Jamie Smith XX. Soon these three were joined by guitarist and keyboard player Baria Qureshi. After playing a few gigs and concerts in an around London the band finally managed to sign a recording contract with Young Turks Records.
The debut album of The XX was self-titled that was released in 2009. This was an instant hit with not just the music listeners but also the critics. The album received mostly positive reviews with Allmusic, Rolling Stone and The Times giving it four stars out of five. It contained eleven tracks including “Heart Skipped a Beat”, “Basic Space”, “Night Time”, “Islands” and “VCR”. The album sold over 400,000 copies alone in the UK earning a Platinum status. It went gold in Germany, Australia, Canada and Belgium. This album also entered all the major music charts across the globe and landed at #1 on French Digital, Irish Independent and UK Indie Album Charts. it raced to #92, #54, #41 and #32 on US Billboard, German Albums, Greek Albums and Danish charts respectively. For this album the band received three Brit Award nominations in 2011 in the category of Best British Band, Best British Breakthrough and Best British Album. The music from this album has been used in a number of popular TV serials like Mercy, 90210, Suits and Cold Case. Music of The XX was also used in the movie I AM Number Four.
The second album by The XX that was titled Coexist went in stores in 2012. This album contained eleven tracks like “Fiction”, “Missing”, “Tides”, “Swept Away” and “Our Song”. It again received very positive reviews from the critics with The Independent giving the album full five stars. It was certified gold in the UK. Coexist improved its overall position on all the charts, it was at the top of the list on various charts like US Alternative, US Independent, Portuguese charts, UK Album, Swiss Album, Irish Independent Albums and Belgian Album charts. the album was released in September and soon The XX embarked on a promotional tour across the UK and performed at venues like Brixton Academy, Colston Hall, Wolverhampton Civic Hall. The XX has performed twice at the Bestival concert. Apart from this it has performed at all the popular music festivals such as Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival and Bonnaroo.
