Origins of The Weeknd
The only child of a migrant Ethiopian couple, Abél Makkonen Tesfaye was born and raised in Scarborough, Toronto. He had had a rough upbringing, where he started to use drugs at a very early age. He later moved on to harder drugs. His stage name, The Weeknd, comes from one weekend when he along with his friends left school and never came back.
In 2010, The Weeknd started to anonymously upload his songs on YouTube. In 2011, he released three mixtapes, namely Echoes of Silence, Thursday and House of Balloons. These were highly acclaimed. Encouraged by the response, he released his compilation album in 2012. His debut album Kiss Land was released in 2013. The album had hit songs “Live For” and “Kiss Land.” While Kiss Land got him noticed, it was his second studio album, which made him a superstar.
Beauty Behind the Madness was released in 2015, and quickly became an immensely popular album. It debuted at No.1 spot on the Billboard 200 and was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA. His upcoming album Starboy is expected to achieve the same feat.
