The Other British Boy Band
The Vamps are the perfect example of a band that has made use of social media to come together. James McVey was a guitarist who was already managed as an artist by Prestige Management. When he decided that he wanted to start a band, he used YouTube to help him locate potential band members.
In 2011, he came across Bradley Simpson. The two got together and wrote a few songs with Simpson doing the vocals. The next year, the duo met Tristan Evans through Facebook. The third and final member of the band, Connor Ball, was introduced to the trio through a mutual friend.
By 2012, The Vamps had officially formed and recorded a YouTube cover performance of One Direction’s incredibly popular song, ‘Live While We’re Young’, as well as a number of other cover performances. The song gained massive support and views on YouTube. In fact, the massive fan support they got was what helped them gain notice.
Although the band has been compared to One Direction quite frequently, they’ve done their best to set themselves apart and create their own unique sound. One thing is for certain, The Vamps definitely have a legion of dedicated fans all across the globe who love their catchy pop hits!
Mainstream Breakout Success
After the band started getting a lot of attention online, it was getting to the point where they would need to be signed by a record label. By the end of 2012, Mercury Records decided to sign The Vamps. The following year, The Vamps would tour with the huge pop band McFly as a supporting act on their Memory Lane Tour. Since the two bands had a similar sound, The Vamps would earn even more fans from the tour.
At that point, the band was in a perfect position to release material which they had written by themselves. Their debut single, “Can We Dance,” was released on YouTube and earned upwards of a million views within the first two weeks of its release. When the single itself was officially released, it debuted at the number two spot on the U.K. Singles Chart.
Growing Success and Albums
In 2014, The Vamps released their first full length studio album called Meet The Vamps. “Can We Dance” and “Wild Heart” were the first two singles released from the album. Both did incredibly well on the charts. Their third single, “Last Night,” debuted at the number two spot on the U.K. singles chart. This marked the third top ten single for the band in the U.K.
In 2015, the band released their second full length studio album called Wake Up. The lead single from the album was also called “Wake Up” and featured Brooklyn Beckham in the music video.
In 2016, The Vamps recorded a cover of ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ for the Kung Fu Panda 3 soundtrack. That same year, the band was also featured on a Bollywood pop song called ‘Beliya’ by Vishal Dadlani & Shekhar Ravjiani.
