The Saw Doctors have risen to great fame since their inception in 1986. Not only have they managed to blow away Irish fans with their rock music, but they have also done tremendously well in the UK and USA.  With a total of eighteen songs making it to the Top 30 singles chart in Ireland, The Saw doctors also had three songs make it to the number one place. The band made history when their single ‘I Useat Lover’ remained at the top of Irish charts for three consecutive months in 1990. Even today, it holds the record of Ireland’s most selling single.  The band also achieved great success at the Meteor Ireland Music Award in 2008, where they received a Lifetime Achievement Award; a big feather in their cap.

The band was initially formed by Leo Moran, Davy Carton and Mary O’Conner, all of whom had prior experience with bands.  Moran had formerly been with the band ‘Too Much for the White Man’, Carton had been a songwriter and guitarist for the band ‘Blaze X’ and O’Conner had previously been a vocalist.  They three began small and performed at local gigs and venues but later gained popularity when they started touring Ireland to support other more famous bands like ‘The Stunning’ and ‘The Hothouse Flowers.’ Later they went on to meet the band ‘The Waterboys’ whose Mike Scott produced The Saw Doctors’ first single “N17”. The song didn’t do too well on the charts initially but later became the band’s unique anthem. The band’s second single ‘I Useta Lover’ topped charts followed by their first album ‘If this is Rock and Roll, I Want My Old Job Back’ which also topped the albums chart.

The Saw Doctors’ success story continued with their second album ‘All the Way from Tuam’ and the formation of their own record label, Shamtown Records. They then managed to enter the UK Singles Top 30 Chart with their first release ‘Small Bit of Love’ under their own label and also appeared on ‘Top of the Pops’ on BBC.

Over the years, The Saw Doctors’ lineup has kept changing, with Carton and Moran being the only two members who’ve been there throughout. The varying lineups have given the band a diversified sound, appealing to all rock fans. Currently the band has Leo Moran and David Carton on vocals and guitar, Kevin Duffy on keyboards, Anthony Thistlethwaite on bass guitar and saxophone and lastly Eímhín Craddock on drums.

To date, The Saw Doctors have released fourteen albums, starting with ‘If this is Rock and Roll, I want my Life Back’ (1991), followed by All the Way from Tuam (1992), Same Oul’ Town(1996),  Sing a Powerful Song (1997), Songs from Sun Street(1998),  Villains?(2001), Play it Again, Sham!(2002), Live in Galway (2004), New Year’s Day (2005), The Cure(2006), That Takes the Biscuit(2007), Live at Melody Tent (2008), To Win Just Once (2009) and finally The Further Adventures of the Saw Doctors (2010).  Their record shows how they’ve been doing consistently well and have managed to sustain their level of commitment to rock music.

The band has also been involved in other projects. Their single ‘She Says’ is the soundtrack of the comedy show “Give My Head Peace’. In addition to that, they came up with a collection of songs in support of the Galway football team, their song ‘Never Mind the Strangers’ was used by Guinness in an advertisement campaign, they also made an appearance in the movie ‘The Tavern’ and their song “Same Oul’ Town” was also used in it. Also, they appeared on the Killinascully Christmas special twice.
