The band was formed in October 2011 after months of discussion over the band’s name. The band’s guitarist Gemma Thompson had been considering this name with lead singer Jehnny Beth (real name: Camille Berthomier) for over a year. She says that her inspiration behind this name was the books she had read as a child such as Lord of The Flies.
At present, The Savages comprises of Jehnny Beth as the lead singer, Gemma Thompson the guitarist, Ayse Hassan the bassist and Fay Milton as the drummer. All the members are from London except Jehnny who belongs to France. She was formerly one half of the French indie rock twosome John & Jehn whereas Milton had a UK garage music background.
The band kicked off with their first gig in January 2012 along with the rock band British Sea Power. The British newspaper The Observer has described The Savages in the following words: ‘It's not exactly sexy, it's not funny and they're not going to be rolling around in mud like the Slits. But it's the closest thing to art that "post-punk"... has offered in a while".
'Flying to Berlin' and 'Husbands', the band’s singles were released in 2012 and received mostly warm reviews. Both of them were released under Jehnny’s Pop Noire recording label. The Guardian Newspaper wrote about the song ‘Husbands’ that "it makes us dream of what it must have been like to have been around to hear, in real time, the debut releases by Public Image Ltd, Magazine, Siouxsie and The Banshees and Joy Division, to feel, as those incredible records hit the shops, that unearthly power and sense of a transmission from a satellite reality".
Next came the group’s concert in CMJ Music Marathon in New York. The concert took place in October 2012 and was appreciated by the critics and fans alike and also by various renowned newspapers such as The Chicago Reader. An Extended Play was also released by the band called ‘I Am Here’ in 2012. The first nomination for the band came in December of the same year when BBC announced their nomination for the Sound of 2013 poll. Though the band did not manage to win the poll, however at such an early stage in their career, being nominated for it is considered just as good. Also in 2013, they were invited to perform on the second day of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Their performance pulled in a huge crowd and was a massive success.
The Savages released their first album ‘Silence Yourself’ in May this year. The album was released by two of Jehnny’s recording labels Pop Noire and Matador Records. Not only has the album been loved the fans but it has found its rightful place on several music charts. It secured the 70th number on the US music charts and the 19th on UK charts. The album has been described as fierce and intense and as something pretty mature to be coming from such a young band. It has been appreciated for its depth and maturity and has earned The Savages a lot of praise along with a huge loyal fan following.
