About the Roots (Hip-hip Band)
The Roots is a neo-soul/hip-hop ensemble founded by Ahmir Thompson (Questlove) and Tariq Trotter (Black Thought) in 1987. The Roots was formed during Ahmir’s and Tariq’s time at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Initially performing on the streets where Ahmir would play drums on a bucket while Tariq would rap to his beats, their first gig took place in 1989 at a local show. Back then they called themselves, ‘Radio Activity’ and after several name changes adopted the name ‘the Square Roots.’ From 1992 onwards, they removed ‘square’ and took on the name ‘The Roots.’
