Joining forces

Before Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley met, they both played music with different bands, Variations and The Paramours respectively. They were later brought together by the founder of the Vineyard Movement, Johnny Wimber to form a new Paramours group in the early 60s. As a band, they kicked off their career by playing shows at a club in Santa Ana called, ‘John’s Black Derby.’ They soon signed a record deal with Moonglow and came out with a single, There She Goes (She’s Walking Away) which received mild success. However, the band later broke up which led Booby and Bill to perform as a duo under the stage name, The Righteous Brothers.

They came under the spotlight when they put out their first studio effort, ‘Right Now!’ It peaked at the eleventh spot on the Billboard 200 and received three stars out of five from AllMusic. The record featured twelve songs out of which, Little Latin Lupe Lu became a hit and was covered many times by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Bruce Springsteen. After the release of their debut album, they went on tour with bands like, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

You’ve Got That Lovin’ Feelin’

The Righteous Brothers reached the pinnacle of success when they grabbed the attention of Phil Spector while performing a show at the Daly City’s Cow Palace. Impressed by the duo, he signed them to his record label, Phillies Records and commissioned Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann to pen down a song for them which turned out to be, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. It was released in 1964.

Produced by Spector, the song became a monstrous hit and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at the first spot. It was also mentioned on Rolling Stones’ list of the, ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ and was also covered by famous artists like, Cilla Black, Dionne Warwick, Long John Baldry and Hall & Oates. It also became the most played song on American Radio and television in the 20th century by amassing eight million airplays in 1999.

A few months after the release of, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ The Righteous Brothers came out with their third studio album of the same name in 1965. The record landed at the fourth and the third spot on the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums respectively. Later in the year, they released their fourth record, ‘Just Once in My Life’ which gave a single, Unchained Melody which went platinum in the United States and the United Kingdom. The song also topped charts in countries like, Australia, Austria, Ireland, Netherland and New Zealand.

Hiatus and comeback

The Righteous Brothers continued to rock the 60s by churning out very successful records. They are also credited for releasing a gold selling album, ‘Soul & Inspiration.’ However, the duo’s popularity started to decline and so, both Bobby and Bill decided to pursue solo careers. But they reunited in the mid 70s and spawned two albums, ‘Give it to the People’ and ‘Sons of Mrs Righteous.’

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees also released a number of compilation records including, ‘Unchained Melody – Best of the Righteous Brothers’ which went double platinum in the U.S. Later, in 2003 tragedy struck when it was announced that Bobby Hatfield has passed away. This led to Bill to stop making music under The Righteous Brothers.

The Revival of The Righteous Brothers

In 2016, Medley partnered with Bucky Heard and revived The Righteous Brothers. In the same year, the duo spawned its self-titled album. Now, the group has unveiled that it will be setting out on a tour this summer and will be playing plenty of shows throughout North America.
