The band was formed in 1977 among the growing punk scene in England. They initially went by the name of ‘RKO’ and then by the name of ‘Radio’ and ‘The Europeans’ before finalizing their current name The Psychedelic Furs. The original members of the band included Richard Butler (lead vocalist), Paul Wilson (drummer), Roger Morris (guitarist), Duncan Kilburn (saxophonist) and Tim Butler (bass guitarist). Later, Vince Ely replaced Wilson on drums and John Ashton was added as the sixth member of the band. Their first album, self-titled, was the production of Steve Lillywhite. It was released in 1980 and was greatly appreciated by their audience in the UK as well as other countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand. It reached the eighteenth position in UK Albums Chart.
However, they achieved commercial success a year later when they released their second album, "Talk, Talk, Talk" which featured on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was a hit in New Zealand where it debuted at No.8 on their charts. It was the first of many to have made it to the Top 10 in the country. Two of its songs, "Dumb Waiters" and "Pretty in Pink" also made waves in the UK. Cinematic version of the latter which was recorded for John Hughes’ 1986 film by the same name was certified platinum. After Kilburn and Morris’s departure from The Psychedelic Furs, their third album "Forever Now" (1982) was released. It was produced by Todd Rundgren. It became their first entry into the US Billboard Hot 100 and its song "Love My Way" entered the UK charts.
The song "Heaven" from their 1984 album "Mirror Moves" charting at No.29 in the UK, became their biggest hit not only in the country but internationally as well. It was strange that this song was never launched in the USA. Instead, their other song "Here Come Cowboys" was released which failed to create the same impact on the American audience. Another song "The Ghost In You" from the same album was greatly popular in the USA and Canada. The Psychedelic Furs’s studio album "Midnight to Midnight" , a production of Keith Forsey, entered the US Top 40 and its song "Heartbreak Beat" became one of their biggest commercial successes to date.
During the 80s decade, the band had become a permanent fixture of rock music radio stations of the USA. 1988 onwards saw a steady flow of singles making to the top of US Modern Rock charts which include "All That Money Wants" in 1988, "House" in 1990 and "Until She Comes" in 1991. Their last commercial album to be released before the band split up was called "World Outside". Richard and Tim Butler formed their own band after the release of the album. However, The Psychedelic Furs got together in 2001 to pick up from where they left. Their hiatus officially ended when they released the album "Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live".
The band’s international success cannot be doubted as their songs were featured on the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The Psychedelic Furs have conducted many tours around the world, not just now but before 1991 also. Their present lineup on tours is the Butler brothers along with Rich Good, Amanda Kramer, Paul Garisto and Mars Williams. This year the group is going on a summer tour, visiting various cities in the USA, with their performances based on the whole of the "Talk, Talk, Talk" album.
The Psychedelic Furs enjoyed much commercial success and gained even greater respect from not only their fellow musicians and rock artists but from the rock bands of today as well. Their novel beats and rhythms, thought-provoking lyrics and tunes that were filled with punk angst bespoke of their name "psychedelic". Their seven albums, numerous compilations and a DVD of their live concert represent their work which spawns over two decades. Over the years they have garnered a huge fan following which includes people from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Therefore, their concerts have always been entertainment that is seldom missed by the rock music lovers and The Psychedelic Furs Tickets have been coveted commodities that the fans can’t wait to get their hands on! So grab yours and have a rocking time.
