The three Catholic priests who make up The Priests met back in the seventies when they studied at the St MacNissi’s College and lived in one boarding house. They began playing music together since then and were signed onto Sony BMG Records in 2008. Following that, they recorded their first album in Rome and Northern Ireland. Some parts of the album were recorded in the Vatican City at St. Peter’s Basilica, a unique honor granted to the group.
Their first album was produced by Sally Herbert and Mike Hedges, producers who have worked with the likes of Dido, Manic Street Preachers and U2. The album was released in thirty countries, including the US, where a PBS Special and an ITV documentary paved the way for its release.
In 2008, The Priests became the group with the fastest selling UK debut for a classical act, according to the Guinness World Records. Their first album went seven times platinum in Ireland, was certified platinum in the UK and several other countries including Norway and Sweden. This was followed by a tour and a series of concerts. Despite the fame and touring, the priests who make up the group have continued their work as pastors in their diocese and parishes, a highly surprising move for many. In Ireland alone, their first album sold more than a massive one million copies, with many more outside Ireland.
In 2009, The Priests began recording their second studio album and titled it Harmony. The album was released later that year and was certified platinum in Sweden and Ireland. It ranked first on the Swedish music charts. The trio of priest musicians went on to tour Ireland and the UK. They performed at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast and the City of Derry’s Millenium Forum. In 2010, they released their third album and their first Christmas music album labeled Noel. It ranked third on the Top Classical Albums chart in the US, as well as grabbed a spot on the Top Christian Albums chart. It ranked eighth on the Canadian Classical Albums chart, as well as charting on the Canadian Albums chart.
They have released three albums, all of which have topped charts in many countries and been certified platinum in multiple places. The three priests are also members of Cappella Caeciliana, having recorded three albums in 2001, 2005 and 2008.
