The Original Pretenders
The Pretenders are an English-American rock band, which was formed in 1978 in Hereford, England. It was a quartet comprising of Martin Chambers, Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott and Chrissie Hynde. Out of these, only Chambers and Hynde are still with the band.
The original quartet was together from 1978 till 1982. Their first single “Stop Your Sobbing” was released in 1979 and immediately got them noticed. “Kid” was the next single which was released during the same year. In 1980, The Pretenders released another single “Brass in Pocket”, which made them stars overnight. The single peaked at No.1 position on the UK charts and at No.14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. The Pretenders had arrived.
Their self-titled debut album was an instant hit as well. The Rolling Stone magazine has listed it at the 155th spot on its list of the “Best Albums of All Time.” After the tremendous success of Pretenders, Pretenders II was released in 1981. The album had hit songs such as “The English Roses,” “Bad Boys Get Spanked,” “Birds of Paradise” and “Adultress.”
1982 was when A Tale of Two Cities came to life for The Pretenders. In every sense, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times …” for the band. They were at the height of their professional success, when Farndon quit the band. As if this was not enough, two days later, Honeyman-Scott died. Thus, 1982 saw the end of the original Pretenders.
Discography: 1982 – 2012
With the demise of two members, the band was left with Hynde and Chambers. Chambers, too, however was not full-time with the band anymore; Hynde remained the only band member who has constantly remained with The Pretenders to this day. However, Chambers joined him sometime on tours and other projects.
From 1982 till 2012, they released eight studio albums, namely Break Up the Concrete, Loose Screw, Viva el Amor, The Isle of View, Last of the Independents, Packed!, Get Close and Learning to Crawl. Out of these Learning to Crawl had platinum sales in the US and Last of the Independents, Packed!, and Get Close were certified gold by RIAA in the US.
