The Platters Tickets
The Platters is a famous American R&B group, one of the most legendary today. At its peak, the group was one of the best known vocal groups active in the golden age of rock and roll music, premiering onto the scene in 1954. The original band has been active since then and has even seen a number of incarnations and tribute bands rise, inspired by them. Known for combining R&B with soul, doo-wop and rock n’ roll, they are a band that can claim having performed at many concerts where The Platters tickets are sold out. They were founded in Los Angeles and have seen their music released by a number of labels including Mercury Records, Federal Records and Musicor Records.
The best known lineup of The Platters consisted of Tony Williams, Paul Robi, David Lynch, Zola Taylor, and Herb Reed. Today, the group’s lineup consists of Tyrone Sweet, active since 1995; Herb Rawlings, active since 2002, John Haynes, active since 2003, Paris Red, active since 2004 and Darrell Scott, active since 2004.Over forty of their songs have risen up the Billboard Hot 100 charts including several songs that have ranked first on the same chart.
The Platters were founded and managed by Ralph Bass back in 1953 in Los Angeles. The first lineup of the group featured a number of vocalists including Alex Hodge, David Lynch, Cornell Gunter, Joe Jefferson, Herb Reed and Gaynel Hodge. The first label they were signed onto was Federal Records, releasing several singles with them. Songwriter and music entrepreneur, Buck Ram, made changes to this lineup, adding Zola Taylor, a female vocalist to the lineup. He also helped the band record eight R&B and gospel songs which were hits in the US West Coast.
At the same time, The Platters went on tour and became highly successful, partly due to the leadership of Buck Ram. He became a reason to their being signed onto Mercury Records and the band released their first single, "Only You", through the label. This song was a massive hit and made it to the Top Ten of the R&B charts, topping the charts for seven long weeks. Their next song, "The Great Pretender", was even more successful, ranking first on the charts and staying at that position for eleven whole weeks.
Following this, The Platters rose to national stardom and even appeared in a movie, Rock Around the Clock, where they performed two of their songs. During the fifties, they released many hit singles and also released covers of older standards. Most of the songs topped charts in the US and also in the UK. What made the band unique was that it was incorporated as a company and each member of the band owned an equal amount of it, in stock, receiving full royalties and having their social security paid.
Today, they are a group who has been inducted into two different halls of fame. In 1990, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and eight years later, into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They are regarded as the first rock and roll group to have had one of their albums rank first in the charts and the only band to have had three of their songs featured on the American Graffiti soundtrack album.
