Produced by Encore Inc., the group performs all its seasons at the Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The Philly Pops are also a founding resident company of the center and have been performing there for years. With the passage of time, the orchestra has gained immense popularity not only in Pennsylvania but also in the surrounding regions.
All these years, the group has performed under the guidance of its founding music director Peter Nero. The talented pianist has won two Grammy Awards in his career apart from six Honorary Doctorates, two historic walks of fame inductions, a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the American Federation of Musicians and also the ‘Pennsylvania Distinguished Arts Award’ from the governor himself.
Peter has served the orchestra to the very best of his abilities and has transformed it from just a collection of musicians to the world-class musical ensemble that it is now. The group owes Peter all the fame and respect that it has earned up till now and will always honor and thank him for his contributions to the orchestra.
However, from now on, the equally talented Michael Krajewski will be leading the orchestra. The maestro has worked with various different orchestras all over the United States, Canada and many other parts of the world. Apart from being the music director of The Philly Pops, Michael is also simultaneously leading the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the Houston Symphony.
As the 35th season of The Philly Pops approaches, the expectation of the fans grows. Michael himself is very excited about the upcoming show. When asked about it, he said ‘I think I have good instincts of what will work with Pops orchestras. I enjoy finding artists who aren't playing with symphonies and working with them to develop programs that would be welcomed by the Pops audience. I seek them out and make new collaborations. It's the creative process that I value most, cultivating new works for Pops audiences like when I encouraged James Stephenson to compose the 'Concerto for Cell Phone,' which we'll be doing in Philadelphia during the April concert series.’
Having earned a major’s degree from Wayne State University in Music Education, Michael became a music teacher. Yet he felt that he could not fully indulge himself in music and reach his complete potential as a musician through this career path. That is when he enrolled himself in the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s graduate program in conducting.
Michael then joined Pierre Monteux Domaine School for Conductors and soon became a Dorati Fellowship Conductor with the Detroit Symphony. He has also gained tons of experience in the field by being the guest conductor of various orchestras across the world. Michael has conducted orchestras of Baltimore, San Francisco, Detroit, Cincinnati, Dallas, Indianapolis, Seattle, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra, Winnipeg, Calgary Philharmonic and several others in his career up till now. Under his expert supervision, The Philly Pops will surely grow bigger, better and a lot more successful than they are now.
The legendary orchestra that mixes together various musical genres and presents a marvelous blend is now back with another amazing season. So without wasting more time, grab your share of The Philly Pops tickets right away and watch the group dazzle the audiences as it always does.
