The Oak Ridge Boys started off as a gospel quartet that called themselves the Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers in the early 1940's. During those early days they performed close to the Oak Ridge area and that is what gave them the unofficial title of The Oak Ridge Boys. Wally Fowler was the group's lead singer and he decided to remain focused on gospel music. The officially called themselves the Oak Ridge Quartet and made their debut at the famous Grand Ole Opry in the year 1945. That original line-up consisted of Fowler, Johnny New, Curly Kinsey and Lon "Deacon" Freeman. The band underwent their first major changes to the line-up in 1949 when Flower split from the band to form an entirely new band. That new group was led by Bob Weber and took up the Oak Ridge name. Soon they started to make their presence felt on the charts and became a major name in the gospel music originating from the South of the country.

In 1956, Fowler decided to sell the band to Smitty Gatlin who then went on to assemble a new line-up. The group officially became The Oak Ridge Boys in the year 1961 when theydecided to become professional. They started to evolve their sound by incorporating folk and country and mixing them with gospel. William Lee Golden, Duane Allen, Willie Wynn and Noel Fox completed the line-up to kick start the most glorious era for The Oak Ridge Boys . Their gospel music kept on evolving to cater to the demands of the popular mainstream music and make it more appealing to the masses. This resulted in the group winning their first Grammy for Talk about the Good Times in 1970. Praise the Lord and Pass the Soup, a track they worked on with Johnny Cash and the Carter Family, became a big hit that captured prominent positions on various country charts. The success paved the way for them to sign for Columbia Records and with MCA later on. The Oak Ridge Boys made their MCA debut in style with the song Y'all Come Back Saloon with it going to the top five. They followed it up with classics You're the One and Room Service. The track I'll Be True to You went to the pinnacle of charts to solidify their status among the big boys of music during that era.
