The initial lineup of the group consisted of Jimmy Thackery on guitar, Mark Wenner providing lead vocals, Pete Ragusa playing drums and Jan Zukowski on bass. Composing songs and playing locally for seven years, the group was finally able to get its big break when it was signed to Adelphi Records. Releasing their debut album via this recording label, the record was titled "Rock n’ Roll". It came forth in 1974 and featured collaboration with artists such as Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin and Muddy Waters’ sidemen. After the success of the record, the Nighthawks brought several album releases in the following years before signing onto Mercury Records.
Some of these albums include the 1976 releases, "Open All Nite" and "Live at the PsycheDelly", "Side Pocket Shot" of 1977 and 1978 albums "Jacks & Kings" and "Full House". In 1980, the Nighthawks became a part of Mercury Records which led to a string of record releases. In 1983, the group was joined by its fifth member, Greg Wetzel who contributed keyboards to the sounds. He remained with the band performing as a full-time member after which he was seen making guest appearances as alumni.
The Nighthawks member lineup had remained consistent since its formation till 1986. However as heavy touring schedules were initiated, Jimmy Thackery decided to leave. His place was replaced by many guitarists such as Warren Haynes, Jimmy Nalls, Pete Kanaras and Danny Morris, Kanaras being the longest performing guitarist. The year 2004 saw further lineup changes as Zukowsi and Kanaras were seen quitting the group. Their places were taken by Johnny Castle on bass and Paul Bell on lead guitars. The current member lineup constitutes of Mark Wenner, Johnny Castle, Paul Bell and Mark Stutso. Over a period of four decades, the group has released twenty six studio albums and two collaboration albums.
