The Marshall Tucker Band was formed in the year 1972 at Spartanburg, South Carolina. Their music focuses on the genres of rock and roll, roots rock, country rock, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, country and southern rock. Originally, the band consisted of Tommy Caldwall as a bass guitarist, Paul Riddle as a drummer, George McCorkle as a rhythm guitarist, Jerry Eubanks on the flutes, keyboards and saxophone, Doug Gray on the vocals and Toy Caldwell as their songwriter as well as lead vocalist and lead guitarist.
Over the course of their forty year old career, the band has performed and recorded their music with countless different lineups. Their current lineup is made up of Marcus James Henderson on the keyboard and flute, B.B. Borden on the drums, Rick Wilis on the guitars, Pat Ellwood on the bass guitar and Doug Grey on the lead vocals. Some of their past members include musicians such as Ronnie Godfrey, Franklin Wilkie, George McCorkle, Paul Riddle, Ace Allen, Tom Robb, James Stroud, Bob Wray, Bobby Ogdin, Rusty Milner and various others as well.
The Marshall Tucker Band issued their debut LP in the year 1973. It was self-titled and recorded with a label known as Capricorn Records. The album went on to become a considerable success and helped develop a solid fan following for the band. The producer of the album was Paul Horsby. It went on to get a gold certification in the year 1975. Following the success of the album, the group went on an extensive tour. They played more than three hundred concerts annually throughout the decade. They were known for their fiery and exciting performances.
In the year 1980, Tommy Caldwell died due to a car accident. Franklin Wilkie replaces him as a bassist. By the mid-80s, most of the initial members of the group had left to pursue other projects. The name of the band is based on a piano tuner from Spartanburg. When the band got together to discuss names for their group in a warehouse where they were rehearsing their music, one of them noticed the name "Marshall Tucker" written on the door key of the warehouse. This inspired them to name their band The Marshall Tucker Band. They later found out that this was the name of a blind piano tuner who had renter the warehouse before them.
The Marshall Tucker Band released their second album in the year 1974. It was titled A New Life. This too went on to become a great success and received a gold certification in 1977. In 1975, the group released another album called Searching for a Rainbow. This too, received a gold certification. One of the most popular tracks from this record was Fire on the Mountains. This went on to peak at number thirty eight on the Billboard chart.
After that, the band released their fifth consecutive record which received a gold status. This was titled Long Hard Ride. The instrumental track of the album got a Grammy nomination. Ever since then, the band has been recording amazing music and performing all over the world.
