Why the Magpie Salute?
The term Magpie Salute is taken from a British superstition about the necessity to salute a Magpie whenever one is sighted to ward off negativity and for good luck. According to band’s guitarist, Rich Robinson, “The magpie falls within the crow umbrella of species, figuratively and literally. Magpies can be black and white, which for me represents the dark and the light.” Therefore, along with being a striking image for the band’s relatively new journey, the Magpie also becomes a nod to The Black Crowes. If we look at the term ‘magpie salute’ one can also understand it to mean a magpie’s salute; i.e. the Magpie saluting to the legacy created by The Black Crowes.
And what a legacy it has been indeed. The Black Crowes have sold over 35 million album copies through their career and have become recognized as one of the greatest American live rock bands. Still going strong after being around from the 1980s, this band’s music is evergreen with 2017’s singles being musically similar those released in 1985.
The Magpie’s Salute, however, is not just a reworking of the Crowes, despite having many of their members in it. As Robinson puts it; “I, and everyone involved, love playing music. Not only on our own, in The Crowes and in my band, but playing music in general. We want to make music again together with a fresh perspective. To present this music I wrote in a different light with these amazing players is going to be really special to me.”
To say that The Magpie follows Robinson’s vision, then, would not be incorrect. However, as he himself points out, the music being created is in absolute collaboration. The band’s members are incorporating their collective influences into creating a completely new sound— from R&B to country— looking at artists and works that underlay with rock and roll.
The band originated in Woodstock’s Applehead Studios, where Robinson had recorded his last three albums. Sven Pipien had been part of the recording session as well and they felt like inviting Ford and Eddie Harsch to join in the session as well. The success of this experience after a great number of years created a great impact on the group. The strength of their musical connection was undeniable.
Even after Eddie Harsch’s untimely demise in November 2016, the rest of the members have asserted that he was seminal to the formation of The Magpie Salute as well. The additional members to the band are an attempt to create a musical experience unlike anything they have done before. The effort here is to mix whatever this band’s members have to offer, musically, and present something completely new to audiences.
An event that has been highly anticipated ever since the Magpie’s announcement in 2016, this year’s US shows were sold out in a matter of minutes. As a result, the band had to announce a greater number of shows to their previous itinerary. The amount of support for this newly constructed group is undeniable; this is truly an iconic moment in the history of American music.
Largely, this is owing to the fact that this is the first time since 1997 where Robinson and Ford are performing as a band together. Then, the band members have asserted time and again that every track, every performance has the whole band’s input within it. Each of the phenomenal artists’ past experiences informs the band’s image, music and even performance schedule. The shows are meant to be a celebration of every aspect of being human— freedom, misery, love, joy; life, in short.
There is a lot of buzz around the band already, and they keep adding more and more venues to their schedule. The Magpie Salute tickets are available for now, however they can literally run out at any minute. Do not miss out on this golden opportunity.
