The Lumineers Story
The Lumineers was founded by Jeremiah Fraites (drummer) and Wesley Schultz (vocalist and guitarist). Their story dates back to 2002, when Schultz best friend and Fraites’ brother, Josh, passed away at 19. Amidst the grief and loss, Schultz and Fraites found solace in music. Soon, they began writing songs and started performing at different gigs in New York. After struggling to survive the city’s cutthroat music scene, the duo packed up their bags and moved to Denver, Colorado.
Denver’s Close Knit Music Scene
After shifting to Denver, they placed an ad on Craigslist in hope of finding a cellist. Neyla Pekarek was the first person to respond to the ad and was eventually invited to join the duo. The band then began performing at a basement club called Meadowlark, where the city’s most talented artists gathered every week for an open mic. The band’s sound soon took shape; they became known for their front-porch folk, classic pop and acoustic rock music.
The Lumineers Make It Big
In 2012, they released their self-titled debut album which climbed to the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 Charts. In 2016, they released their second album, Cleopatra, which debuted at the number 1 spot on the US Billboard 200.
