The group was formed back in 1985 in Queens, New York and so far they’ve sold well over fifteen million singles and albums all across the globe; hence the most successful female hip hop group of all time. The group was originally known as the Super Nature when they released their debut single Showstopper. Since their formation, the group has released five studio albums, all over which either went Gold or Platinum; which is why they’ve also received numerous awards. The group disbanded in 2002, but got back together in 2007. And this year, they’ll be on road as their Legends of Hip Hop tour draws near. Other artists who’ll be performing are no less interesting. Rob Base, who rose to mainstream success with his hit single "It Takes two" in 1988. is performing at the Legends of Hip Hop. Upon its release, "It Takes Two" The single rose to massive popularity, and was played in various clubs all across. Although both the album and the single didn’t do all that well critically, but it was surely a commercial success, and Rob Base has been an R&B sensation ever since.
Biz Marki is another hip hop legend who rose to success with the release of his second studio album which featured his breakthrough hit single titled "Just a Friend". The song featured out of tune choruses and rap verses, which helped establish his distinct music style.
At this show, you will be able to enjoy live performance by Doug E. Fresh, who is considered master of beat boxing. He is also known as the first beat boxer when it comes to rap music, and is well known for his perfect delivery of the effects, drum machines and even chunks of samples from various songs. Fresh made his mark and earned his famed amongst the hip hop fans with his early solos titled Original Human Beatbox and Just Having Fun. MC Lyte, who is known as one of the most controversial female rappers emerged in later 80s, is also performing there.
aWith her musical renditions, Lyte opened door of opportunity for the prospective female rappers after she made her studio debut with her album Lyte as a Rock. MC Lyte rose to mainstream exposure with her second album, which also spawned her hit single "Cha Cha Cha".
Kurtis Blow doesn’t need any introduction whatsoever as he was the first rapper who emerged back in the 80s and helped rap music to become a commercially acceptable genre. Blow became the first rapper ever who signed a deal with a major record label, and his debut album was the first rap album ever to be released on major label. So amongst list of some of the forefathers of rap music, Kurtis Blow takes the top spot.
Naughty by Nature got a hold on some mainstream fan base with their catchy tunes pretty early in their career. Formed back in 1986 in East Orange, NJ, Naughty by Nature is not a name unknown to all the hardcore rap fans out there.
Kool Moe Dee kicked off his musical career by being a member of a hip hop group named Treacherous Three, but later he decided to pursue a solo career. Known for his extremely fast flow, Kool Moe Dee has given some fine singles and albums ever since he started his solo career in 1986.
Big Daddy Kane is also amongst some of the significant figures in the hip hop music scene. Kane gave several hit singles and albums back in 80s, and though he didn’t do all that good on the charts, but he still managed to do well commercially.Slick Rick and Chubb Rock both are refined rappers and musicians in their own right. They’re responsible for giving out several hit albums and singles back in 80s and 90s, which is why they are well reputed in the hip hop music scene.
