The show features singer Norma Jean who is an iconic figure in the country music genre. The singer who witnessed unprecedented success during the 1960s started her musical journey on radio. At the young age of twelve, she had a radio show to herself on KLPR-AM. Starting her on tour performances with Merl Lindsay and His Oklahoma Night Riders, she went on to perform alongside several other famous bands. Norma Jean was an integral part of the Bill Gray Band. Jean first got national exposure with her regular appearance at the ABC-TV show called ‘Ozark Jubilee’. Through the program she became known as the ‘Pretty Miss Norma Jean’. In 1950 she signed a contract with the label Columbia Records and released a string of singles. Later she became part of the weekly television program called ‘The Porter Wagoner Show’.
Jean produced her first single in collaboration with RCA Victor. The song was ‘Let’s go all the way’. It was met with a huge positive response and stood amongst the top fifteen on the Billboard Country charts. Soon she released her record with the same title. Another couple of tracks from the album, namely ‘I’m a walking advertisement’ and ‘Put your arm around her’, made it to the top forty in the country music countdowns. Following the success of these singles, Jean released another record called ‘Pretty Miss Norma Jean’, a title she was honored with during her television days. The album went on to be the most successful one of her musical ventures, topping the country album charts at number three. Between 1965 and 1967, the singer presented a chain of hit country singles and records, while simultaneously appearing on the Wagoner Show. Her biggest hit was however yet to come. And it came in the form of an unusual recording in collaboration with Liz Anderson and Bobby Bare. The name of the composition is ‘The Game of Triangles’ and as the name suggests it carried the theme of a love triangle. The joint effort of the three artists earned them a Grammy nomination. Jean’s last single, ‘Heaven help the working girl’ is amongst the earliest feminist songs. It made its place amongst the top twenty on the country charts during the late 60s.
One of the most famous artists featured by the Ladies Night Out show is Crystal Gayle. With over twenty number one tracks, the singer ruled the country music world during the 70s and 80s. Voted as one of the fifty most beautiful people of the world by People’s Magazine in 1983, Gayle is remembered for her gorgeous long length hair. Her first single ‘I’ve cried’ came out in 1970. It peaked amongst the top twenty five at the Billboard’s Country singles chart. Later she joined hands with the producer Allen Reynolds released her self-titled debut record in 1974. This followed a series of hit singles like ‘I’ll get over you’, ‘You never miss a real good thing’ and ‘I’ll do it all over again’.
The biggest hit of Gayle’s career came with the number ‘Don’t it make my brown eyes blue’. The song earned her a Grammy for the Best Female Country Vocal Performance. But this was just the start of her magnetic vocal skills and musical pieces. The singer continued to rule the charts for the next decade, producing many hit numbers like ‘Talking in your sleep’ and winning several awards.
Norma Jean and Crystal Gayle are once again bringing their magic back to the arenas. And they are not alone.
