The Kooks’ inception has a very interesting story behind it. The original members of the band met each other as students in 2002 at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. Luke Pritchard, the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the group, went for shopping with Paul Garred one day and the two of them decided to form a new band.
Soon Pritchard got Max Rafferty and Hugh Harris on board because they loved the music of legends like, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and The Police as well. The Kooks then went on to record a demo EP and sent it out to land gigs. Instead of getting a chance to perform live, they were approached by different managers and record companies. They finally landed a deal with Virgin Records.
The Kooks hit the studio and came out with their first album, ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ in 2006 which went quadruple platinum in the United Kingdom within a year. The album reached the number two spot on the UK Albums Chart and has sold over two million copies worldwide. It was positively received by the critics with Brian Belardi of Prefix stating, “An almost-perfect blend of '60s-style Britpop, '90s-style Britpop, and the post-punk of the new millennium.”
Following the success of ‘Inside In/Inside Out,’ the band released their second album in 2008 titled, ‘Konk’ which went to the number one position on the UK Albums Chart and number ten on the US Top Alternative Albums chart. It also produced three singles which became Top 50 hits including, Shine On, Sway and Always Where I Need to Be with the latter picking up the number three spot on the UK Singles Chart.
The Kooks have followed the release of ‘Konk’ by coming out with two more studio albums, ‘Junk of the Heart’ and ‘Listen’ which captured the number ten and sixteen spots on the UK Albums Chart respectively. ‘Listen’ was given positive remarks from the critics as The Telegraph gave the album four out of five stars and praised the album in words, “The Kooks have come out fighting though, completely re-evaluating and overhauling their sound and the result is an exuberant fourth album bristling with character.”
The Kooks have been a force to be reckoned with over the years. They have won the UK Festival Award for the ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ and an MTV Europe Music Award for the ‘Best UK & Ireland Act.’ On top of that, they have been also been nominated for a Brit Award for their single, She Moves in Her Own Way.
The Kooks have been gone from strength to strength to rank alongside the biggest names in rock music today. A journey that began in Brighton has now made the band one of the most sought after acts in the business. They are about to embark on a tour and will soon be making their way to a city near you to deliver a performance or two to remember. Grab The Kooks tickets and listen to the best of rock music, live.
