Featuring two of the biggest names in US rock history, and one of the most famous Hollywood stars in the world, The Hollywood Vampires truly are a super group. The band released its debut album in September 2015 and is now touring in support of it.
Original Hollywood Vampires:
The Hollywood Vampires initially referred to a drinking club formed by Alice Cooper in the 1970s at the Rainbow Bar and Grill in West Hollywood. The club featured only celebrities and famous rock stars from the era including The Who’s Keith Moon and The Beatles’ Ringo Starr. Other members included Harry Nilsson, Micky Dolenz and occasionally John Lennon, Keith Emerson, Marc Bolan, Joe Walsh and Klaus Voorman, among others.
The Rainbow Bar still has a plaque which states “The Lair of the Hollywood Vampires.” New members could join the exclusive group, but only if they could out-drink the rest of the members. The current band name pays homage to all the artists involved in the group and they usually cover songs associated with those artists.
Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Johnny Depp are the three permanent band members of the group. For live shows, the band has usually incorporated the services of bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum; both former Guns N’ Roses members.
Alice Cooper is the band’s lead vocalist. Born Vincent Furnier, the iconic rock star rose to fame during the late sixties and early seventies as the front man of the band Alice Cooper. After releasing several highly successful albums with the band, Furnier adopted the band’s name and embarked on a solo career.
Cooper’s raspy vocals, penchant for theatrics and unpredictable on stage antics have made him one of the most captivating rocks stars of his time. His penchant for dabbling in horror gimmicks and thinking of stunts to shock people, led him to be known as the “Godfather of Shock Rock.” Alice Cooper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
The lead guitarist for The Hollywood Vampires, Joe Perry is one of the most iconic and legendary guitar players to emerge from the US. As the lead guitarist for the rock band Aerosmith, Perry became one of the most well known musicians in the country. With hits like “Dream On,” “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion,” Aerosmith dominated the charts during their heyday and sold out arenas all over the world.
An innovative guitar player, Joe Perry was placed at number eighty fourth on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Aerosmith in 2001.
He is one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, and there is hardly anyone, remotely interested in Hollywood, who wouldn’t know about Johnny Depp. Having played iconic roles like Edward Scissorhands, Sweeny Todd, Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow and starred in numerous blockbusters, Depp is a certified Hollywood A-lister. Apart from that, he is a pretty decent guitarist as well.
Depp has collaborated with and contributed guitars for numerous songs by different artists. Some of the major artists he has performed with include: Oasis, Avril Lavigne, Flea, Steve Jones, Paul McCartney, Marilyn Mason and Joe Perry. Depp has been close friends with both Perry and Alice Cooper and has recorded material with both of them.
