Edgar, when in early teens, used to play at local bars with his elder brother Johnny White. Together they would play at pubs and various gatherings as well as with bands such as "Johnny and the Jammer" and "The Black Plague". He was always supported by his parents in pursuing a musical career; hence, his family has a major part to play in his musical education and background. Edgar Winter had mastered instruments such as keyboards, guitar, bass, saxophone and drums even before he had entered college. Edgar and Johnny performed two songs together "I Can’t Stand It" and "Tobacco Road" in 1969 at Woodstock Festival, which led to the signing of his first contract with Epic Records in 1970. Edgar released two albums with Epic; "Entrance" and "Edgar Winter’s White Trash". In 1972 Winter teamed up with Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff to form "The Edgar Winter Group". With this band came some of the greatest successes for Winter. Their album "They Only Come Out at Night" featured the all time #1 instrumental hit "Frankenstein" and the popular "Free Ride". Edgar is the very first artist to introduce synthesizer as the main instrument in a song. On US rock radio charts, Winter’s song "Keep Playing That Rock ‘n’ Roll" made it to number 70. His album "Roadwork" reached number 23 on album charts. Although Edgar has never been able to reach the fame of 70’s again, he continues to tour and explore music. He has also been pursuing movie world, where he has found success too, notably the remade version of "Frankenstein" for the movie "Wayne’s World II". His music has also appeared in "Netherworld", "My Cousin Vinny", "Son In Law", "What’s Love Got to Do with It" and some fifteen other movies. Edgar got together with Richard Marx, Hamish Stuart, Gary Wright, Billy Squier, Colin Hay and others in 2006 on a tour with "Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band". He made appearance in 10th All Starr Band 2008 too.
Edgar Winter has made numerous TV and radio appearances for the promotion of his music. His TV appearances have been in "The Cape", "Dave Letterman" and "Mysterious Ways". Edgar has collaborated with several artists and has released over 20 albums and is yet never satisfied enough to join the famous music stardom. In his almost 50 decade career in the music industry, he has never been afraid to explore new edges and corners in the world of music and has experimented a lot with instruments. Although his personal life has been highly affected by albinism; he cannot drive a car and always needs to have someone around him while traveling, he has never let it interfere or disturb his career. His latest album to date "Rebel Road" was released in 2008. The album is known to have been a revival of what he used to play in 1970’s. "Rebel Heart" is your typical 70’s classic rock. Through "Rebel Heart" Winter has been gradually making his way back into his roots. With that he has continued touring and performing live on stage, a place where his fans never decrease in number.
