The Dupress was formed in New Jersey’s Jersey City in the early part of the 1960s. The band was a pet project of students from the William L. Dickinson High School, who cherished music and wanted an outlet for the creativity they possessed. Michael Arnone, Joe Santollo, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow and Joey Canzano were the main faces of the band back in the day. The Duprees, even when they were inexperienced singers and musicians and were totally new to the music field had a unique style and confidence that even the most seasoned musicians do not have. They were noticed by George Paxton who had worked as a leader of a famous music band for many years. George Paxton found the Duprees to be interesting and fresh and he thought that they would be a valuable addition to the music industry. He offered to sign them with his label Coed Records and the band readily accepted his offer.
The first single that the Duprees released after their record deal was "You Belong to Me,’ which was actually a cover of a hit song by Jo Stafford. The release by the Duprees was very famous among the music fans and the band was quick to gain fame and recognition in the music industry.
Over the next few years, The Duprees were lucky enough to have forty more hit songs that were featured in the top charts of the music industry. These songs included "My Own True Love", "Have You Heard", "Why Don’t You Believe Me" and many others.
As The Duprees continued to give hit after hit, a controversy regarding the band’s title arose in which another band claimed to have ownership rights to the name "The Duprees." A legal battle ensued with both parties claiming the right to the name. However, luck and facts were on the side of the original band and they won the case and continued to use the band title.
Over time many of the original band members of The Duprees left the band and new members joined in. However, the true essence and charm of the band remained the same and The Duprees continue to give the same wonderful and memorable music to their fans. The band still retains the old classic traditions and style that made it famous decades ago.
The Duprees are popular for giving their own interpretation and tribute to timeless classic songs. The band remakes these songs and adds its own twist to them, making these songs all the more appealing. The Duprees specialize in covering love songs, wherein they add their own romantic wistfulness and touch.
These days the band comprises of members Tony Testa, Tommy Petilo, Jimmy Spinelli and Phil Granito. Tony Testa has assumed responsibilities as the leader of the band and he lights up each show of the band with his charismatic and energetic personality. Tommy Petillo is blessed with dynamic and powerful vocals that make him stand out. He is dubbed by many critics and reviewers to be the "heart, soul and voice" of the band. Jimmy Spinelli is famed for the energy that he brings to every concert. His personality is magnetic and literally pulls audiences to the stage. Lastly, Phil Granito makes his mark in the band by having a unique, special voice that gives an extra lift to all the songs that the band plays.
The Duprees are an important part of music history. Their contributions are valuable and loved by millions of fans. So do not delay in purchasing the Duprees tickets and come watch the live show at the Taj Mahal.
