The Descendants will be performing at multiple cities across the US all the way from April 2018 till November 2018. This major chunk of the year will be spent in promotion of their latest release, 2016’s Hypercaffium Spazzinate. Who are the Descendants?
The Descendants are a punk rock band formed by Frank Navetta, Bill Stevenson and Tony Lombardo. The lineup of the band has since changed to include more members – Milo Aukerman, Stephen Egerton and Karl Alvarez, while some of the founding members have parted ways.
The Descendants are arguably the most beloved groups to have emerged from the punk scene in the 1980’s, dealing with themes of the troubles of youth and relationships. The lyrical content of their music got them the label of being one of the most significant bands of the 1980s punk movement.
Talking about their music, the author of American Hardcore: A Tribal History, Steven Blush commented that their “cheeky love songs disguised as hardcore blasts became the most aped formula in rock.” Their music has also been labeled as “an unpretentious, catchy winner” by Ned Raggett of AllMusic. He further goes on to add that, “The playing of the core band is even better than before, never mistaking increased skill with needing to show off; the Lombardo/Stevenson rhythm section is in perfect sync, while Navetta provides the corrosive power. Add in Aukerman's in-your-face hilarity and fuck-off stance, and it's punk rock that wears both its adolescence and brains on its sleeve.”
With such reviews, there is no mistaking the uniqueness of this iconic band – all the more reason for you to get your hands on The Descendants tickets.
The Music of the Descendants
To date, the Descendants have released a total of seven studio albums, three live albums, five music videos and three singles among other contributions. The punk rock group released its first single called “Run the Wild/It’s a Hectic World” in 1979. Since then, the group has been an unstoppable force in the music industry, making iconic tunes.
Next, the band released the Fat EP in 1981 and began working on their debut album. This album, titled Milo Goes to College, was released in 1982 under SST Records.
Success with Music
After numerous lineup changes and a recording contract with Epitaph Records, the Descendants released, Everything Sucks in 1996. This was the first album by the band that charted on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 132.
2001 saw another successful attempt by the band under Epitaph Records. The double album, Live Plus One, managed to peak at number 45 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart.
The Descendants’ most recent work, their 2016 album Hypercaffium Spazzinate, peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart and has become a fan favorite. This album was released after the band returned from an extended hiatus.
Lyrical themes explored in this album mainly revolve around getting old, love and relationships, fighting for yourself etc. The album received an overall positive response, from both critics and fans, with Ian Gormley from Exclaim! appreciating the group’s “continued relevance” and Rolling Stone Australia giving it a rating of four stars.
