The British glam rock band accounts for three studio albums altogether; Permission to Land, One Way Ticket to Hell…and Back and Hot Cakes. The debut album stole the first spot on the UK Albums Chart while landing at number 2 on Irish Albums Chart. It also succeeded in charting in other countries; Sweden, Australia, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and New Zealand being just a handful. Gathering positive reviews from Pitchfork Media, UnCut, Allmusic, The Guardian, Blender and Mojo, the album proved to be a benchmark of quality. Permission to Land won three BRIT Awards and two Kerrang! Awards. To top it off, it also put the band on a touring blitz. First coming across Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium Tour in 2003 and then their performance at the Carling Festival. The second album came out in 2005, this time around reflecting styles including celtic, blues, Arabian and country accompanied by lyrics depicting satirical comedy. The songs Hazel Eyes, One Way Ticket, Is It Just Me, Knockers and Dinner Lady Arms exemplify it the best.
The album released to positive reviews as Q magazine considered it as the 22nd Best Album of 2005. It made its way to the UK Albums Chart at number 11 while also charting in the US, Austria, Australia, Germany, France etc. One Way Ticket to Hell…and Back came up with three singles. One Way Ticket and Is It Just Me reached number 8 on UK Singles Chart while Girlfriend found 39th position. Owing to the success of the album The Darkness enjoyed an extensive tour as they hit major cities in UK and Ireland. The tour kicked off in Dublin at Point Theatre and came to an end in Nottingham Arena. Before Hot Cakes released in 2010, the band said farewell to the lead singer Justin Hawkins in 2006. In the meanwhile other projects namely Stone gods and Hot Leg surfaced. The former was another hard rock/ heavy metal band that emerged in 2007comprising Dan Hawkins, Richie Edwards, Toby MacFarlaine and Ed Grahams. The band lasted for a few years till it went on hiatus in 2010.
Hot Leg on the other hand was Justin Hawkins’ band consisting of Pete Rinaldi, Darby Todd and Samuel SJ Stokes. Coming into existence in 2008, this venture also lasted for a short time as it remained active till 2010. The Darkness reunited in 2011 recreating their magic while doing shows in Norwich, Leamington and Bush Empire before performing at some of the most renowned festivals awaiting them. Download Festival, Przystanek Woodstock and Sweden Rock Festival being among them. The band then released their third album entering UK Albums Chart at number 4 giving hits like Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us, Every Inch of You, Street Spirit and Everybody Have A Good Time. The Darkness announces U.K tour dates
The group that rose to fame in the early 2000s thanks to its multi-platinum selling record, ‘Permission to Land,’ The Darkness is ready to rock the fans of hard rock music again. The quartet has announced a new tour which will begin on November 23rd. They will perform their first show of the trek in Southampton. The group will then go on to play five more shows in November in different cities including, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow. They plan to conclude their tour on December 14th. Apart from touring, the band will also be releasing its fifth studio album later this year.
