Exploring the magical island
Jimmy Buffett was born in Mississippi to Mary Lorraine and James Delaney Buffet, Jr in 1946. The artist completed his education from the University of Southern Mississippi from where he received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1969. Due to the passion he had for country music, Buffett moved to Nashville where he worked as a correspondent for Billboard magazine.
Buffett soon decided to pursue a career in the music industry and recorded his first album, ‘Down to Earth’ that was released in 1970. The album did not chart but received four out of five stars from AllMusic. He later met with country artist, Jerry Jeff Walker who took him to Key West on a busking expedition in 1972. Buffett felt right at home and decided to settle there. That led to him establishing the easy going personality that was later reflected in his music as he combined country with folk, pop and rock.
The best of tropical music
Jimmy Buffett soon signed with ABC Dunhill and came out with his third studio album, ‘A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean’ in 1973 which received positive reviews from the critics. He continued to put out more albums including, ‘Living & Dying in 3/4 Time,’ ‘A1A’ and ‘Havana Daydreamin’ but got his breakthrough when he released ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.’
The record went platinum in the United States and reached the second spot on the Billboard 200. It featured his first hit single, Margaritaville which landed on the first spot on the Billboard Easy Listening chart and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016 for its historic and cultural references. Jimmy Buffett released a couple of more albums, ‘Son of a Son of a Sailor’ and ‘Volcano’ which went platinum and gold in the U.S respectively in the late 1970s.
