Formative Years

After working with a number of experimental bands in Sydney, The Church members finally bumped into each other and immediately started recording songs together. After a four-song demo caught the attention of publisher Chris Gilbey, the band was officially signed to his record label and began working on its debut album. The quartet released its first album titled “Of Skins and Heart” in 1980 and the album became a commercial success. After the single “The Unguarded Moment” became a Top ten hit in Australia, The Church was signed to major labels across US, Europe and Australia. Steve Kilbey had written most of the songs and the album went gold, smashing the Albums Chart at number 22. By now the band had developed a distinctive style of its own and the members were often seen wearing paisley shirts with tight jeans and carrying jangly guitars.

Tours and More Releases

After the success of its debut, the band undertook a national tour all over Australia. This was followed by the release of its sophomore album “The Blurred Crusade” which demonstrated a maturity in the band’s lyrical abilities. With the Top 30 track “Almost With You”, the album reached at number 10 and earned the band widespread recognition. The album was also released in Europe and the band embarked on a tour of Australia, Scandinavia and Europe by 1982. The third album “Séance” performed poorly in Europe and US and The Church responded by releasing an EP that gave hits like “It’s No Reason” and “Electric Lash”. The band’s later albums could not succeed and it was not until 1985’s “Heyday” that the band returned to the spotlight. The Billboard 200 charting album reached number 19 in Australia and was followed by an international tour. The band’s commercial comeback was marked by “Starfish”, which debuted at number 11 in Australia and hit the Top 50 in America.

The Church is still known as a classic rock band even though it underwent numerous lineup changes. The members have all had solo careers of their own but rock fans are in love with the ensemble’s signature music. The band continues to record songs and has a total of 25 albums under its belt. Between 2002 and 2009, the band released nine studio albums and toured the US in 2011 to perform at sold-out arenas in nine cities.
