The history of the Chieftains goes all the way back to 1962 when the group members; Paddy Moloney, Martin Fay, Sean Potts, Micheal Tubridy and David Fallon got together to record an album for a record label called Claddagh. The group took its name from a poem called Death of a Chieftain, written by the director of Claddagh Records. Before getting together to record the album, all the members of the original lineup has experience of performing with each other as they previously performed together in Sean O Riada Folk Orchestra called Ceoltoiri Cualan.
With the music on their album, The Chieftains gave a new concept when it comes to Irish Folk music by introducing instrumental pieces rather than vocal pieces. At that time, Irish folk music mainly relied upon vocal arrangements and acts like Paul and Mary, The Dubliners and Peter, were at the height of their success. At that time when instrumental album came once in a blue moon, the Chieftains made place for themselves in the Irish music industry. Following the release of their debut album, the group didn’t release another studio album for next five years. Their second studio album, Chieftains 2 was followed by several changes in the band’s line up as well. Also after the release of their second studio album, the Chieftains started garnering mainstream recognition and popularity in Ireland for their own interpretation and taste of music. In 1971 the group released its third studio album titled Chieftains 3, and it only added up to the growing fan base of the group.
Apart from the casual music listeners, their music also started attracting the attention of high profile artists like Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull and Peter Sellers. By the time that the group released its fourth studio album, they had already started to get recognition in United States and United Kingdom as well. The Chieftains tickets were sold for the first time in United States when they performed at the Irish Arts Theater in New York City in 1972. The group also went on tour in 1973 and 1974, and started to make some name for themselves as live performers as well.
With the passage of time, the group’s listenership only grew, and they started to attract large number of their fans to their live concerts. The Chieftain tickets saw a boost in demand as soon as the group announced that they would be performing live. For their outstanding work in representing traditional Irish music to the world, the Chieftains have also received the title of Ireland’s Music Ambassadors in 1989. During their years of play, the group has collaborated with multitude of different artists from various genres. By doing so, Chieftains brought their music to a much larger chunk of audience, and increased the overall popularity of Irish music all across the world.
