Formed in 1966, this Scottish pop band started off as "The Saxons" when the initial members Alan Longmuir, Derek Longmuir and Gobby "Nobby" Clark made the group. The rest of the band members were later inducted into the group and finally they got their first recording with the producer Jonathan King. Before their debut breakthrough in the British music scene, they had given a single hit Keep On Dancing and were also seen on Top of The Pops, a BBC One production. In their initial phase a number of changes regarding the band members also took place and it was in 1974 that The Bay City Rollers were a big hit on the UK Chart Hits with their single Remember Sha La La La.
Remember was such a huge hit that it created ripples in the music industry and following this the band released a whole new series of singles like Summerlove Sensation, Shang-a-Lang and All of Me Loves All of You. All these singles topped the UK charts as being one of the top 5 numbers. 1974 and 1975 were the glorious years and a tremendous beginning for the band which was on the road of becoming the teenage sensation. With more hits like Bye, Bye Baby, Once Upon a Star, Give a Little Love they got compared to The Beatles. Their unique dressing and different styles were also a catchy part of their performances.
In just two years of their formal launch in the music arena, the recognition of the Tartan pants heroes poured out to different parts of the world where their hits made a huge impact. Saturday Night made a swelling explosion in the U.S reaching number one on Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Canadian charts as well. Japanese and Canadian audiences were also hit by the fever of the rollers’ songs. Their symbolic Tartan pants were just a craze everywhere. They made appearances in a popular Australian TV show and made news every where they went. By 1976 they were not only a popular domestically but had earned fame beyond borders.
As with many big bands, the rollers also underwent a lot of changes as far as the band members were concerned but this did not hinder their success. They continued to lure their audiences and came up with new albums and singles that would just give them more coverage as ever. The late 70s saw a few more replacements in the band and produced a live album Rollerworld: Live at the Budokan 1977. In 1978 they came up with their Saturday morning television show The Krofft Superstar Hour as well. Their music saw greater maturity during this era and they swayed a little from their teenage oriented numbers.
It was in the 1980s and 1990s that the band saw new beginnings with new members like Faulkner, Kass, Jason Medvec, Andy Boakes and Mark Roberts. The Bay City Rollers now rejuvenated, performed on a number of tours across North America. They were also covered extensively on media in the U.K and in 2004 a compilation of the bands super hit numbers Very Best of Bay City Rollers hit the U.K Albums Chart and received much appreciation.
