The 39 Steps musical is basically a farce play, in language of theater a farce is a theatrical production that is comic in nature and is a parody of a certain subject. The situation in a farce is made comical by using verbal comedy mistaken identity and unlikely circumstances. The 39 Steps play is adapted as a parody of a popular movie of the same name that was released in 1935. This suspense movie was directed by legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. The movie was based on a novel by John Buchan that was written in 1915. The play not only parodies the movie The 39 Steps but the script also includes small parodist scenes from other famous movies of Hitchcock such as Psycho, North by Northwest and Rear Window.
The plot of The 39 Steps musical was kept more or less the same with four main characters similar to the ones in the actual film. The debut performance was in 2005 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the main actors were Mark Hadfield, Lisa Jackson, Robert Whitelock and Simon Gregor. The musical premiered in London at Tricycle Theater in the year 2006. This time only Simon Gregor was included from the previous cast whereas the other three characters were played by Charles Edwards, Catherine McCormack and Rupert Degas. The play got good response and eventually in 2006 the West End debut of The 39 Steps took place at the Criterion Theater. The 39 Steps officially opened its doors for Broadway audience at the American Airlines Theater in 2008. Later in the year 2009 it was moved to Helen Hayes Theater. The musical ran for over 700 performances making it one of the longest running plays in the last seven years history of Broadway. The Broadway cast of the musical included acclaimed artists like Arnie Burton, Jennifer Ferrin, and Cliff Saunders.
The 39 Steps Spanish production was also made in 2008 which opened in the famous city of Madrid at the Maravillas Theater. Out of nine award nominations The 39 Steps has managed to win a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Sound Design and last but not the least two Drama Desk Awards for Unique Theatrical Experience and Outstanding Lighting Design. The West End production of the play is still running and this time the cast includes Ian Hughes as Man, Stephen Critchlow as Man, Catherine Bailey as Annabella Schmidt/ Pamela and Margaret and Andrew Alexander as Richard Hannay. The play has been performed in other countries like Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Poland, Argentina and Israel.
