When Tenth Avenue North came onto the music scene, they changed the way contemporary Christian music was perceived by the masses. They added their own style to it and it has worked well for them.
Tenth Avenue North was not formed as a result of some meticulous planning. In fact to say the band was incepted by accident would not be too far off the mark. In the spring of the year 2000, Brian Homan and Mike Donehey met as students at the Palm Beach Atlantic University. Donehey was then introduced to a drummer named Jason Jamison by Homan and the three hit it off straight away. They began to make music and named the band “Fraggle Rock.”
It wasn’t long before they landed their first gig when they were asked to perform at a café on the university campus. Fraggle Rock brought the house down with their performance and that made them quite popular in the university. They then got the opportunity to perform at “Student Venture,” a student conference and shortly after that performance, the name of the band was changed to Tenth Avenue North.
Coming To Terms with the Industry
It wasn’t all plain sailing for Tenth Avenue North in those early years. They had to face up to multiple changes in the line-up and as a result of that, they had to bring in plenty of guest performers to play with them at the gigs they were getting. Tenth Avenue North then went on to win a Battle of the Bands competition and soon they were opening for an upcoming Christian music artist known as Katy Hudson who is now known as Katy Perry.
Tenth Avenue North was soon back to its original line-up of Jamison, Homan and Donehey. In 2002, Andrew Middleton joined them and they hit the road for their first major tour. 2003 saw them raise money among themselves and they used to those funds to record and release their debut album titled “Don’t Look Back.”
They came out with their second album “Speaking of Silence” in 2005 and soon after its release, Homan quit and he was replaced by Scott Sanders. They had also been joined by Daniel Zayas as well by that point in time. In 2006, they increased their touring workload and it was at this point that Jeff Owen, who had replaced Homan for a few days before Sanders arrival, returned to the line-up. The band then went on to record “God With Us EP” which turned out to be their last independently released album.
The Breakthrough Arrives
Tenth Avenue North made their way to Nashville and they were signed by Reunion Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music. They soon released the album “Over and Underneath” on May 20, 2008. The record received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic. It had two number one tracks By Your Side and Love is Here. The album itself sold over half a million copies to be certified gold in the United States. Not only that, but they also performed sold-out shows on their tour to promote the album and also won a Dove Award for the “New Artist of the Year.”
Sanders left the band and the remaining members went to work on their next album “The Light Meets the Dark.”Ruben Juarez III and Brandon Shirley however joined Tenth Avenue North and their next studio album hit the stores on May 11, 2010. The album peaked at the first spot on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and went to the seventh spot on the Billboard Top Rock Albums. It also climbed to the fifteenth position on the Billboard 200. The band clinched another Dove Award to cement their place among the biggest acts in Christian music.
Christian Music Superstars
Tenth Avenue North have released three more studio albums since then and two of those have gone on to peak at the number one positions on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. They also released a live album in 2011 which was titled “Inside & In Between” and it made it to the thirty fourth position on the Top Christian Albums chart.
The time has come for them to hit the road once again and if history is anything to go by, it will be another memorable road trip. The good news is that you can be a part of it too. All you have to do is book your Tenth Avenue North tickets in time.
