Tanglewood on Parade is one of the finest traditions of the Tanglewood Music Festival. The festival takes place every summer on the Tanglewood estate, which is in Lenox, Massachusetts. It consists of series of pop music, jazz, contemporary music, musical theatre, choral music, chamber music and symphonic music concerts. Considered to be the best music festival in the United States and perhaps in the whole world, the Tanglewood Music Festival is also home to the very famous Boston Symphony Orchestra

The Boston Symphony Orchestra or BSO is one of the “Big Five”, an elite league of American symphony orchestras, consisting of only five members. As the name suggests, it is based in Boston, Massachusetts and was founded in 1881. During the summer time, the orchestra plays at the Tanglewood Music Centre and otherwise, it performs at Boston Symphony Hall. James Levine is its music director, along with the legendary John Williams, as laureate conductor of the Boston Pops, an associated act of the BSO.

The Boston Pops were founded four years later than the BSO and plays show tunes, popular classics, and lighter music as compare to the more traditional and heavy music of the BSO. The Boston Pops were made famous by Arthur Fiedler, who was its conductor from 1930-1979. He was succeeded by John Williams, a movie composer, who remained with the Boston Pops as their conductor from 1980-1993. Ever since then, Keith Lockhart has been the conductor of the Boston Pops.

Alongside the Boston Pops and the BSO, the BSO Chamber Players and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus also play at the Tanglewood Music Festival. The Boston Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players was founded in 1964. Amazingly, all of its original players are still with it. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus was founded in 1970 by John Oliver, its founding director. It consists of 250 singers, who are essentially volunteers.

If there is one person from this family of musicians who deserves an in detail introduction, then that person would be John Towner Williams. He is an American pianist, conductor and a composer. A man who would be immediately recognized for his amazing work in movies like Harry Potter series, Home Alone, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Hook, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones series, Superman, Jaws and plenty more, has been making awesome music for more than sixty years now. The recipient of 21 Grammy Awards and five Academy Awards, Williams has also worked on the music of four Olympic Games, Lost in Space, a television series and the NBC Nightly News. A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Famer, Williams remains the second person along with Alfred Newman to be nominated for most number of Academy Awards, after Walt Disney.

Reviewing 2010 Tanglewood on Parade, Lesley Ann Beck wrote that the evening was never static, despite the fact that seven compositions, all of John Williams were played, since each composition was unique in itself. The evening was kicked off by Keith Lockhart whose orchestra played the March from Superman. Next was JFK’s turn, also the work of Williams. Continuing with Williams work, music from Harry Potter was played, including Harry’s Wondrous World, Fawkes the Phoenix, and Hedwig’s Theme. After some more amazing music the orchestra broke and after the break one of the best orchestra’s in the world, the BSO took the stage. Under the leadership of its conductor Julian Kuerti, the orchestra played from one of the passages from West Side Story called For New York. Afterwards, Williams himself took over the orchestra and played from Memoirs of a Geisha. It is worth mentioning here that the very famous Yo-Yo Ma was on Cello for this performance. The night, according to Beck continued with one great number after another.

The uniqueness of Tanglewood on Parade is that it has something for everyone. For the more classical minded, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture will be played and for the more contemporary minded the works of legendary John Williams will be performed. And to top it all, dazzling display of fireworks is also always on the cards. So be a part of this awesome and a unique musical experience and buy your Tanglewood on Parade Tickets now
