Switchfoot is an iconic American rock band hailing from San Diego within the US state of California. Soon after, this band became famous in the world of mainstream music when not one but four different Switchfoot songs were made part of the hit 2002 film, A Walk to Remember.
 
Thus, in 2003, Switchfoot came out with their first major label album, a release titled as The Beautiful Letdown. This was an epic album, a massive success whose songs topped the charts and which sold around two million and six hundred copies, a big number and a rarity for the debut album of a rock band. From then onwards, Switchfoot was all the rage in America with the band especially renowned for its energetic and electric live shows, unique and very entertaining in the world of rock and roll. Switchfoot’s latest album was released in 2011 and was a studio release titled as Hello Hurricane. This album was awarded with the Grammy Award as the Best Album the same year.
 
This band’s name, Switchfoot, is basically a surfing word that means to change the feet so as to face the opposite way. The band says that this was what their music was all about; ‘change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music’. Switchfoot first started out as Chin Up in 1996 and started playing live shows. Hardly a few shows had passed that this rock outfit caught the attention of Charlie Peacock, a renowned name in the music world. This incredible artist signed Switchfoot onto his record label, Re:think Records, through which the band released three different albums. These were The Legend of Chin, Learning to Breathe and New Way to Be Human.
 
Though marketed within the Christian music scene and widely played on Christian music radio, Switchfoot soon developed a reputation outside of this and became a band that was sought after all over the US. Despite the small audience, of the first three Switchfoot albums, Learning to Breathe, was soon certified gold and even honored with a Grammy Award nomination as the Best Rock Gospel Album. But the big breakthrough moment came when four of Switchfoot’s songs were featured in a phenomenal movie.
 
From then onwards, it was all uphill for Switchfoot. Their first album was certified double platinum and their next release, a live DVD titled as Live in San Diego was also certified platinum, a huge feat for a live album. This was followed soon after by The Early Years: 1997-2000, a compilation of Switchfoot’s first three albums that soon sold over half a million copies. In 2005, Switchfoot was honored with five Dove Award nominations and four Dove Awards. In 2005, Switchfoot released the album Nothing is Sound whose first hit single, Stars, topped the charts, was part of a HBO ad and was also part of an Olympics ad. The album itself ranked third on the Billboard 200 charts. 2006’s Oh! Gravity was also as successful; added to topping the Billboard charts, it also ranked first on the iTunes Top Albums charts.
