The first to perform in the lineup is the legendary group the "Wu-Tang Clan". They are locals of Staten Island, NewYork. This American hip hop band consists of rappers RZA, Method Man, Raekwon, GZA, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa and U-God. Ol’ Dirty Bastard, was also part of their band, he passed away when he was 36 years of age.
The band is frequently joined by Cappadonna, a childhood friend of the members. The band is a particularly influential name in the world of hip hop music. They have been responsible for the careers of other popular singers, rappers and groups. Critics and pop culture enthusiasts to this day claim that no other act in this genre has ever come close in causing the frenzy that they did. They albums that they produced inspired other classical albums as well. Their appearance at this year’s Summer Jam will mark exactly 20 years since the first time they performed at the festival in its first year.
Another performer listed in the line is Kendrick Lamar. As a local from Compton, California, he is an American hip hop recording artist, who was first signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, and later signed with Interscope Records. Apart from being a solo artist, he is also an active member of the hip hop group, Black Hippy with members School Boy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul. The singer first gained fame when he released a mixtape in 2010, "Ovely Dedicated". He then released a full length record without a major label, but gained considerable amount of fame. He topped iTunes, and his record became known as the biggest selling of the year in terms of digital sales. Lamar then became prominent in the social media outlets, and became an online star. He has stated 2Pac, Jay Z and Eminem as his major influences and favorite rappers. He says he takes his idols very seriously, not only in music, but in his everyday life as well.
The other hip hoper that will take the festival stage in the summer is this year’s rising star, ASAP Rocky. This young man has made a name for himself over the years, starting out as an independent artist who made mixtapes to be noticed, and achieving the status of the top act in his genre for 2013. His debut record, "Long. Live. ASAP" attained the top spot on the chart and has been selling quite well, given that it was only released in January. The rapper has inspired many in his genre for breaking through the adversities of his conditions, working hard, and achieving the status that a lot of people desire but cannot attain in this industry. In the festival, he will be able to meet his biggest inspiration in music, the Wu-Tang Clan. Growing up in Harlem himself, he grew up listening to other New York based artists such as "The Diplomats" and Mobb Deep.
Yet another artist set to perform on the Summer Jam stage is the rapper 2 Chainz. Real name Tauheed Epps, the artist has been performing since 1997, but only broke the mainstream market in early 2012, when he received a record deal with the label "Def Jam Records". His debut album was called "Based on a T.R.U Story" and it featured three leading singles, all of which would perform quite well on the charts. In "No Lie", he collaborated with fellow rapper Drake. Other singles such as "I’m different" and "Birthday Song" also did similarly well. His breakthrough came early on in the year when he was nominated for three Grammy Awards, two for his song, "Mercy" in which he collaborated with Big Sean, Pusha T and Kanye West, and for his album, "Based on a T.R.U Story". Now, the rapper is getting into acting as well by earning a role in "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit".
The festival is going to be filled with the best hip hop talent from this year, and from all time. Fans should get Summer Jam tickets right away.
