Stoney LaRue was born in 1977 in the town of Taft, Texas. His complete name is Stoney LaRue Phillips. He was raised in Oklahoma and during his childhood he developed an interest in country music. Soon he relocated to Stillwater, Oklahoma where he performed at various local night clubs and bars. He used to perform in a band that included her sister Hallie and brother Bo Phillips. During this time he came across two more music friends namely alternative rock guitarist Cody Canada and singer and guitar player Jason Boland, and these three decided to jam together at a popular location in the city.
 
In 2002, LaRue eventually landed a contract with Smith Music Group and since then he has remained with this recording label. During his career he has collaborated with other bands like Casey Donahew Band, Josh Abbot Band, Jason Boland & the Stragglers and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Red Dirt is a music that originated primarily from Oklahoma. This music genre gets its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma. Red Dirt music has originated from genres like bluegrass, country rock, honky tonk music, the Tulsa sound, folk and western swing.
 
The debut album by Stoney LaRue was released in 2005, it was named The Red Dirt Album. This album immediately caught attention of music fans and entered the US Country Charts #7o. LaRue went on to release his second album in 2007 that was titled Live at Billy Bob’s Texas. This proved to be an even better effort and immediately entered the country charts at #65. Live Acoustic was the third studio album that went in music stores 2009. This album also managed to land at #66. In 2011 LaRue released his fourth studio album Velvet that was an instant hit. Velvet till date remains the best effort of LaRue, it was the first album to enter US Independent Album charts at #5 and US Billboard at #53. This album was also the highest charting album of LaRue as it landed at #15 on country charts.
