Stone Sour was the brainchild of well known heavy metal singer Corey Taylor. He formed this band in 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was initially joined by bassist Shawn Economaki and drummer Joel Ekman. With these two musicians Taylor managed to release two demo tapes. During mid 90’s Taylor was joined by talented guitarist Jim Root. Together they performed for a couple of years but then the band went into a hiatus because both Root and Taylor were more occupied with their mainstream band Slipknot. The band came out of the hiatus in 2002 and released the first studio album that was self-titled. Current lineup includes Taylor on vocals and additional guitars, Root on lead guitar, Roy Mayorga on drums and Josh Rand on guitars. Bassist Johnny is the band’s touring bassist whereas Rachel Bolan (bassist for metal band Skid Row) fills in as a studio member. In 2011 acclaimed drummer Mike Portnoy toured with Stone Sour. The group since debut is signed with recording giant Road Runner Records. The group has performed with other popular groups like Amebix, Isaac James, Nausea and Soulfly.
The debut album immediately caught attention of the metal fans and managed to sell around half a million copies earning a gold status. It charted not only on Billboard but in other countries like Germany, France, and the UK. After this album there was a gap of almost four years and in 2006 Come What(ever) May was released. This proved to be an even better effort by the band, apart from earning a gold status, it also charted in all major countries around the world including Australia, France, Germany, Sweden, UK, Switzerland, Ireland and Netherlands. Released in 2010 Audio Secrecy was the third studio album by Stone Sour that again charted in different countries but failed to earn any certification. Till date the latest album by the group is House of Gold & Bones- Part 1 that went in music stores in 2012. It raced to the top position on Billboard Hard Rock charts and UK Rock Charts, it also managed to land at #7 on US Billboard, #13 on Australian, #7 on German, and #8 on Swiss music charts. This proved to be a good effort by the band as it received favorable reviews from critics Allmusic gave four stars out of five, Kerrang! gave four out of five whereas Big Cheese and Artistdirect gave full marks to it. Apart from the actual band lineup other musicians also collaborated on it such as Karen Graves on violin, Kevin Fox on strings arrangements and Anna Redekop on viola. Album included tracks like "My Name is Allen", "A Rumor of Skin", "Influence of a Drowsy God" and "Last of the Real".
