Born as Gordon Mathew Thomas Sumner in 1951, Sting began his musical career at the age of twenty. After moving to London in 1977, he formed the band by the name of The Police along with Henry Padovani and Stewart Copeland. They released their debut album ‘Outlandos d’Amour’ in 1978. The album was an international hit, reaching number two spot on Netherland Album chart and peaking at sixth spot in New Zealand and UK. The album was certified platinum in the US, Germany, France, Canada and UK. The debut album was followed by a string of chart topping music albums, all of which were certified platinum or ranked high on the charts around the world. The albums included ‘Reggatta de Blanc’, ‘Zenyatta Mondatta’ and ‘Ghosts in the Machine’.
Their last and most successful studio album ‘Synchronicity’ was released in 1983. The album topped the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and US Album charts. It was certified eight times platinum in the US, where as platinum in France, Canada and UK. The band’s most successful single to date has been ‘Every Breath You Take’. Written by Andy Summers and Sting, the track has sold over a million copies worldwide. It has been ranked amongst the ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Times’ by the Rolling Stones Magazine. The song also won Sting a Grammy Award for ‘Song of the Year’ in 1984.
In 1985, Sting marked the beginning of a successful solo career with the release of ‘The Dream of the Blue Turtle’. The album peaked high on worldwide charts and was certified three times platinum in the US, two times platinum in UK, and platinum in Germany and France. Since then he has released seven platinum selling studio albums including ‘If On A Winter’s Night’, ‘Sacred Love’, ‘Brand New Day’, ‘Mercury Falling’, ‘Ten Summoner’s Tales’, ‘The Soul Cages’ and ‘Nothing Like the Sun’. Over the years, he has been awarded numerous awards and honors. He has received over seventy award nominations, bagging thirty six awards including eleven Grammys and twenty five American Music Awards.
Sting’s Back To Bass Tour began in 2011 to celebrate his two compilation albums, released to mark his twenty-fifth anniversary as a solo musician. Since then, over hundred and thirty performances have been staged under the Back To Bass Tour around the world. The tour has delivered over fifty performances throughout North America, ten in Asia, four in Africa and more than eighty live acts in Europe. This season, the tour will bring Sting to the Ravinia Festival stage in Highland Park, Illinois.
