Stevie’s Early Years

Born in 1950, Stevie Wonder is a multi-instrumentalist, record producer, songwriter and singer. Hailing from Saginaw, Michigan Stevie went blind shortly after birth as a result of retinal detachment. This however didn’t stop him from being a high-achiever. He began learning instruments such as the drums, harmonica and piano and at the mere age of ten formed a singing duo named ‘Stevie and John.’ Together they performed at local clubs and parties.

Stevie’s Discovery & Commercial Success

When he was eleven, Stevie presented his original composition, ‘Lonely Boy’ to lead singer from ‘The Miracles’, Ronnie White. The artist flew him to Motown Records, where Stevie was offered a recording contract in 1961. With this he became the youngest person to sign a recording deal with a major record label. A year later in 1962, he singer released his debut full-length album, ‘The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie’ which consisted of the number one hit, ‘Fingertips.’

Stevie Wonder’s career boasts of countless platinum hits, 30 number one singles and 25 Grammy Award wins. In 2008 Billboard included Stevie in its ‘Hot 100 Top-All Time Artists’ list. He was placed in fifth place. He was also ranked 15th on Rolling Stone’s ‘100 Greatest Rock and Roll Artists of All Time.’ He has received inductions into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame, SoulMusic Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
